Chelsea have reached an agreement with Crystal Palace to sign France international defender Maxence Lacroix, with the fee expected to land in the region of £51 million. The 26-year-old has given permission for the transfer to be finalised, making him one of the club's most significant defensive investments since their ownership change.
Lacroix joined Crystal Palace from Wolfsburg in 2024 and has since established himself as one of the most reliable centre-backs in the Premier League. He played a key role in Palace's remarkable back-to-back trophy haul — winning the FA Cup and the UEFA Conference League in successive seasons — and has now earned his move to a top-six club.
Why Chelsea Are Paying £51m for Lacroix
The logic behind the move is clear when you study the numbers. Lacroix ranks among the top five fastest centre-backs in the Premier League, a crucial attribute in the modern game when defending high defensive lines. More striking still is his record in one-on-one situations: no defender who faced 50 or more such duels in the past two seasons has won the ball back more consistently than Lacroix.
At 6'4" tall, he adds aerial dominance to Chelsea's backline, where he ranks third for clearances and seventh for aerial duels won league-wide. Sky Sports analyst Adam Bate noted that Chelsea have not paid a fee for a player aged 26 or over since 2022 — relaxing that policy for Lacroix speaks volumes about how highly they rate him.
Palace Eye Replacements as Chelsea Offer Defenders
As part of negotiations, Chelsea have offered Crystal Palace the opportunity to discuss signing one or more of their available defenders, with Axel Disasi, Trevoh Chalobah, and Benoit Badiashile attracting interest from Selhurst Park. Palace have been in the market for a centre-back since selling Marc Guehi to Manchester City in January.
Palace had been in discussions with Augsburg over Chrislain Matsima but Sky Sports News understands they are now prepared to walk away from that deal after becoming frustrated with the pace of negotiations.
Lacroix Set to Join Enzo Maresca's Rebuild
Chelsea's summer business has been relentless. In addition to Lacroix, they have already brought in Geovany Quenda from Sporting for £43.5m, Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £43m, and the record-breaking £117m signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. Lacroix adds the defensive solidity to complement that attacking intent.
He is expected to undergo a medical at Chelsea imminently, with an official announcement expected in the coming days.
