There are nights when one player simply refuses to let a tournament end for his nation. Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami was one of those nights, and Jude Bellingham was that player. The Real Madrid midfielder scored twice — once in first-half stoppage time and again three minutes into extra time — to rescue England from the edge of elimination and send them into the 2026 World Cup semifinals with a 2-1 victory over a stubbornly excellent Norway side.

Norway Draw First Blood Through Schjelderup

England had looked passive and ponderous through the opening half-hour, and Norway made them pay. Andreas Schjelderup, the Benfica winger who had been a handful all evening, cut inside his marker and slotted a cool finish past Jordan Pickford on 36 minutes. The goal was no more than Norway deserved, and there was genuine anxiety spreading through the England end of the stadium. Thomas Tuchel's side had offered almost nothing going forward, with Erling Haaland dominating the aerial battles against an increasingly stretched backline.

Bellingham Equalises Right on the Whistle

What happened next summed up everything that makes Bellingham so different from almost every other player in world football right now. Deep into first-half injury time, with his team visibly flagging, he met a driven cross from the right, took one touch to set himself, and buried a finish into the bottom corner. The goal was clinical. The timing was everything. England went in level at the break when they had absolutely no right to be, and the momentum had completely shifted. Norway, who had been controlling the game so comfortably, suddenly looked fragile going into the dressing room.

Extra-Time Winner Sends England Through

The second half was tight and cagey, with neither side able to find the decisive moment. Norway had chances — Haaland headed wide from a corner that should have been converted — and England hit the post through a deflected shot. With full time looming, the game felt like it was heading toward penalties. Then came the decisive moment in the third minute of extra time: a loose ball bounced inside the Norway penalty area, struck the goalkeeper's leg, and fell kindly for Bellingham, who reacted fastest and stabbed it home. The goal was scrappy. He did not care. England were through.

What This Means for England

England will now face Argentina on Wednesday, July 15 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta — a semifinal that needs no additional hype, given the history between the two nations and the fact that Lionel Messi is likely playing the final international matches of his career. For England, the key concern heading into that game will be whether their creative players can produce more than they managed for large stretches against Norway. Bellingham dragged them through twice in the same night. He may not be able to do it again on his own against a more dangerous opponent. Tuchel will need others to step up.
