Alejandro Garnacho is pushing to leave Chelsea less than a year after his high-profile arrival at Stamford Bridge, in a development that has sent shockwaves through the club and raised serious questions about the squad-building strategy at west London's most ambitious club.

The 20-year-old Argentine winger was absent from the opening days of Chelsea's pre-season training, with sources close to the player indicating that he is seeking a permanent move away. His arrival from Manchester United had been heralded as a major statement of intent — and his departure, should it materialise, would be an equally significant statement about the problems lurking beneath the surface.

The Background to the Exit Push

Garnacho joined Chelsea in a deal worth a reported £60 million, arriving with enormous expectations and the reputation of one of Manchester United's most electric young forwards. But adapting to a new system, a new set of teammates, and a club in constant transition proved more difficult than anticipated. He made 28 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring six goals — numbers that fell short of what was expected from a player of his price tag.

The appointment of Thomas Tuchel, who has his own preferences for how wide forwards operate in his system, may have accelerated Garnacho's desire to seek a new environment. Tuchel demands relentless pressing and disciplined positional work from his wide attackers — qualities that sit uneasily with Garnacho's more instinctive, freedom-oriented style.

Where Could He Go?

A return to Spain or a move to Italy would seem the most logical destinations for a player of Garnacho's profile. His agent is understood to be exploring options across the top European leagues, with Atletico Madrid, Juventus, and Napoli all mentioned as potential suitors. Given Argentina's involvement in the World Cup semi-final, any deal is unlikely to be finalised before mid-July at the earliest.

For Chelsea, the pressing concern is whether they can recoup close to what they spent — and whether Tuchel has the authority to sanction a sale that, at least publicly, will look like an admission of error.

Transfer context: Alejandro Garnacho (Argentina, b.2004) joined Chelsea from Manchester United in summer 2025. Now reportedly pushing for exit after one season. Summer transfer window open until September 1.
