When Norway and Senegal meet at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford tonight, both sides will know exactly what is at stake. A win for either team — in a group that also contains France — would put them in a strong position to reach the Round of 16. A defeat, and the pressure on the final matchday becomes significant. Group I has not played out predictably, with Norway's 3-0 dismantling of Iraq and France's 3-1 victory over Senegal on Matchday 1 setting up a group where both remaining teams need maximum points to feel comfortable. Tonight's match is therefore one of the most important on the day's card.

Norway's Threat and Haaland's Ambition

Norway arrive at this fixture on the back of a thoroughly convincing opening performance. They beat Iraq 3-0 in their Matchday 1 game, with Erling Haaland leading the attack in the way that has made him one of the most feared forwards on the planet. The Manchester City striker has been chasing major international silverware for the entirety of his career and arriving at a World Cup for the first time — Norway's first since 1998 — represents the stage he has always deserved. He will be acutely aware that Senegal's defence, which was breached three times by France in the opening round, is far from impregnable. Whether Haaland can stay onside long enough to convert the chances he creates is often the only question worth asking about him.

Senegal's Response After France Defeat

Senegal's 3-1 defeat to France was not as straightforward as the scoreline implies. They competed for large portions of the match and scored a respectable goal of their own, but Kylian Mbappé's two-goal performance and an early strike from Benjamin Barcola proved too much. Head coach Aliou Cissé will have spent the week working to restore confidence without losing the aggressive, direct style that suits his squad's best players. Sadio Mané, now 34 and in the twilight of his career, carries enormous responsibility for Senegal and will be looking to show that his quality translates to this environment. Whether his legs can sustain a full 90 minutes at the required intensity is worth watching, particularly against Norway's relentless high press.

How the Match Is Likely to Unfold

Norway, under manager StÃ¥le Solbakken, press aggressively and transition quickly. They are not a possession team in the traditional sense — they want to win the ball high, move it early, and find Haaland in pockets of space inside or behind the defensive line. Senegal will look to get men behind the ball and hit on the counter, which is their most natural attacking threat. A tight first half is possible, but with the pressure on Senegal, they may need to take risks in the second half if the score remains level. That could open the game up and play into Norway's hands. A 2-1 victory for the Scandinavian side looks like the most likely outcome, though Senegal have the quality to surprise.
