Wilson Rescues the Hammers
They were going down. For long stretches of the second half, West Ham United looked every inch the side that was about to join the Championship next season. Losing 1-0 at home on a Wednesday night, pressing but not penetrating, running out of ideas as the clock ticked down — the season seemed to be slipping away from Julen Lopetegui's side in front of their own supporters.
Then Callum Wilson happened. The striker, who had been on the pitch for just 11 minutes as a substitute, met a cross from Jarrod Bowen with a header that crashed off the underside of the bar and over the line in the 94th minute. London Stadium exploded. A point rather than three, yes — but in the context of this relegation fight, a point at home when you were losing is as good as it gets.
How West Ham Got Here
West Ham arrived at this moment of the season as one of the pre-season favourites to finish in the top half. The summer recruitment was decent; Lopetegui had steadied the ship after the chaos of the final David Moyes year. But a catastrophic run through January and February — eight games without a win, with defensive displays that bordered on the surreal — left them in a genuine battle they never anticipated.
The Wilson goal is the latest example of a squad that still has quality but has been utterly unable to sustain any momentum over a full 90 minutes. They produce moments of quality — Lucas Paquetá in the first half was outstanding — but converting that quality into consistent results has been beyond them.
Three Games Left, Nothing Decided
The point leaves West Ham two points above the relegation zone with three games to play. Their final three opponents are Bournemouth at home, followed by trips to Fulham and Everton. Winnable games, on paper. But West Ham have been making unwinnable games out of winnable ones all season.
Tottenham's recent revival makes this even more precarious. If De Zerbi continues to find results, West Ham cannot afford a single slip. Wilson, for his part, celebrated the late equaliser with the look of a man who knew exactly what it meant. He has been through relegation battles before. This one, he said afterwards, is "absolutely winnable." The evidence is not convincing. But football, as West Ham fans know better than most, rarely is.
