The Connection That Could Change Everything
When Arsenal hired Gabriel Heinze as assistant manager last summer, eyebrows were raised in some quarters. Heinze — a Champions League winner with Manchester United, a former Vélez Sarsfield and Argentinos Juniors manager — brought defensive organisation and Argentine football intelligence to Mikel Arteta's coaching staff. What nobody foresaw was that he might also become Arsenal's most important transfer link.
Heinze and Julián Álvarez are close. They were compatriots in the Argentina setup for several years — Heinze as a senior figure, Álvarez as the emerging forward — and that relationship has not diminished with time. Multiple reports in Spain this week suggest that Heinze has been in contact with Álvarez's representatives about the possibility of a move to Arsenal this summer. Atlético Madrid are furious. They insist he is not for sale.
What Álvarez Would Bring
The 26-year-old has been one of the best number nines in world football since arriving at Atlético from Manchester City last summer. He has scored 22 goals and contributed 12 assists in all competitions — a better return than anyone at the club — while also pressing relentlessly and creating space for teammates. Diego Simeone built his system around him almost immediately.
At Arsenal, he would operate as the central striker Arteta has long sought. Gabriel Jesus has struggled with injuries, Kai Havertz has been productive in the false nine role but lacks the pure goalscoring instinct that a title-winning team demands in its final third. Álvarez, at his best, provides exactly that.
The Price Problem
Atlético paid approximately £80 million to bring Álvarez from Manchester City. They have no intention of selling at a loss. Reports in Spain this week suggested a fee of €150 million — around £128 million — would be required even to open discussions. That is an enormous sum, even for a club of Arsenal's financial standing following the Saudi Public Investment Fund's increased involvement.
Arsenal, however, are understood to have the backing of ownership to make a statement signing this summer. The logic is straightforward: they are one or two positions away from winning the title, and Mohamed Salah's departure from Liverpool has recalibrated the premium-player market. If the Gunners are serious about ending their wait — and they are — Álvarez is worth pursuing at almost any cost.
