An English Semi-Final 42 Years in the Making
The last time Nottingham Forest appeared in a European semi-final, they were about to complete a back-to-back European Cup triumph under Brian Clough. That was 1980. Forty-two years, two relegations, financial near-collapse, and one remarkable resurrection later, Forest stand one win away from a European final again. On Thursday night, they travel to Villa Park with a 1-0 lead from the first leg, Chris Wood's penalty the difference between the two sides.
How Forest Won the First Leg
The City Ground atmosphere was extraordinary for the first leg — the first all-English European semi-final in 17 years — and Forest fed off it. They were disciplined, well-organised, and dangerous on the counter. Vitor Pereira's pressing system suffocated Villa's usual build-up, and when Anthony Elanga won a penalty midway through the second half, Wood stepped up with characteristic composure to score.
Villa had chances — Ollie Watkins hit the post, and Morgan Rogers had a goal ruled out for offside by the tightest of margins. But Forest held firm. They have become expert in that, winning close games and keeping clean sheets in a way that feels almost unnatural for a club of their recent history.
Villa's Task Tomorrow Night
Unai Emery has been here many times. No manager in European football history has won more Europa League titles — four, all with Sevilla and Villarreal — and he will not be panicking at a one-goal deficit. Villa Park on a European night is intimidating, and Villa have the quality in forward areas — Watkins, Rogers, Leon Bailey — to create problems for any defence.
But Forest are a different proposition away from home to the one that struggled in the Premier League last season. They have conceded just three goals in seven European away games this season. If Villa are to get through, they will need something special.
What a Final Would Mean
If Forest win, they face Portuguese side Braga in the final at Besiktas Park, Istanbul on May 20. For a club that was in the Championship six years ago, that sentence barely makes sense. For their supporters, it would be the most extraordinary night in a generation. The City Ground would never be the same.
