Mateus Fernandes: West Ham Set £84m Price Tag as Manchester United Circle

West Ham United have made their position crystal clear: Mateus Fernandes is not leaving the London Stadium this summer without a fee of at least £84 million, and they are not negotiating downward. The 22-year-old Portuguese midfielder has been one of the Premier League's most eye-catching players in the second half of the season, combining tenacity, technical quality, and box-to-box athleticism in a way that puts him in a very select group of midfielders currently operating in England. Manchester United have been the most heavily linked club, and the interest is genuine — but at £84 million, the numbers threaten to derail any deal before it even begins.

West Ham's confidence in holding that line stems from a straightforward reality: Fernandes has years left on his contract and they are under no financial pressure to sell. The club's ownership is not looking to cash in on a player who gives them real quality in a position where the Premier League's best sides spend enormous sums. If a club wants to take him, they pay full price. That is the message from the London Stadium, and clubs circling the player know it. United are weighing the cost against other priorities — the Ederson signing from Atalanta is already progressing — and it remains to be seen whether they can afford both deals in the same window.

What Makes Fernandes Special

The Portuguese under-21 international arrived from Sporting CP in the January 2025 window at a fee considered a bargain at the time. He has since proved that assessment correct several times over. His ability to break opposition lines with movement, combined with a pressing intensity that suits the modern game, has drawn comparisons to some of the more highly regarded midfielders in Europe. His passing range is sophisticated for his age, and he has shown the capacity to operate effectively both as a progressive eight and a more defensive-minded six when required. West Ham manager Graham Potter has built much of the team's tactical identity around him in recent months, which only adds to the club's reluctance to let him go.

For United, the attraction is obvious. Michael Carrick is trying to restructure a midfield that has been one of the most dysfunctional in the top half of the table for several seasons. The Ederson signing addresses one profile — the disciplined, ball-winning holding midfielder — but Fernandes would bring something complementary: energy, carrying ability, and the kind of relentless work rate in both directions that covers ground and creates space. The two players would theoretically complement each other well. The challenge is simply the cost. Spending north of £120 million on two midfielders in a single window requires either a significant outlay of capital or substantial player sales to fund it.

The Likely Outcome

The most probable scenario this summer is that Fernandes stays at West Ham. United will almost certainly prioritise the Ederson deal and at least one other signing in a different position before returning to the midfielder market. West Ham, meanwhile, will use the summer to build around their standout performer. There may come a point — perhaps next summer, or the one after — when the fee comes down slightly and the window of opportunity opens. But for now, the £84 million wall is firmly up, and it is holding.
