Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League final preparations have been thrown into uncertainty after Ousmane Dembélé was forced off during Sunday's Ligue 1 season finale against Paris FC. The Ballon d'Or winner limped away from the pitch at the Stade Jean-Bouin shortly before half-time, heading straight to the dressing room after what appeared to be a thigh issue — and the timing, with the showpiece final against Arsenal in Budapest just 12 days away, has understandably set alarm bells ringing across Paris.

What Happened Against Paris FC

Dembélé's afternoon ended prematurely in a match PSG ultimately lost 2-1. He was replaced by Portuguese striker Gonçalo Ramos before the interval after pulling up and signalling to the bench. There was no collision involved — the winger appeared to feel something in his leg during a running phase, which immediately pointed toward a muscular problem. PSG went into the fixture knowing the game carried no League consequences for them, with the title already secured well in advance, but the sight of their most influential forward walking off in visible discomfort was the last thing Luis Enrique wanted from the day.

Luis Enrique's Reaction and the Medical Picture

The PSG head coach, to his credit, did not attempt to hide behind ambiguity in his post-match press conference. "I think it's just fatigue," Enrique told reporters. "What we're saying today is just speculation, but I don't think it's anything serious, and there are still two weeks left." The club have scheduled thorough medical scans for Monday, which will give a much clearer picture of what Dembélé is dealing with. Until those results come back, any assessment of his availability for the final remains, as Enrique admitted, speculative. What is not speculative is how important the 29-year-old has been to PSG's season — he has registered 19 goals and 11 assists across 39 appearances, and he sits at the centre of almost everything Luis Enrique's side does in the final third.

What It Would Mean for the Final

Dembélé's absence from the Budapest showpiece would not just hurt PSG psychologically — it would fundamentally change how they operate. Arsenal have spent months preparing for a winger who can pull full-backs out of shape, cut inside at pace, and produce moments of individual brilliance in tight situations. Without him, Luis Enrique would need to rethink his attacking structure, and the burden would fall heavily on Achraf Hakimi, Vitinha, and whichever replacement comes in on the left. Ramos is a capable centre-forward but he is not a direct Dembélé substitute in positional terms. The French champions would still be dangerous — their route to the final included a staggering 6-5 aggregate semi-final win over Bayern Munich — but losing a player of Dembélé's calibre for a match of this magnitude would be a blow that no club could fully absorb.

The Bigger Stakes: World Cup on the Horizon

Beyond the club context, there is a national dimension to this injury that adds yet another layer of pressure. Dembélé has already been named in Didier Deschamps' France squad for the 2026 World Cup, and any muscle problem that fails to clear up quickly could jeopardise far more than just one club match. The French federation will be monitoring Monday's scan results with close interest. Deschamps has built a great deal of his attacking game plan around what Dembélé offers on the right side, and the prospect of losing him for the early stages of the tournament — or worse — would be a significant setback for Les Bleus. For now, the two-week window before the Champions League final offers a realistic, if tight, opportunity for recovery. PSG and France will both be hoping the scans deliver good news.

Injury context: Ousmane Dembélé, 29, was substituted mid-first half vs Paris FC (Ligue 1, 18 May 2026) with a suspected thigh issue. PSG lost 2-1. Medical scans scheduled for Monday 19 May. Champions League final: Arsenal vs PSG, Puskas Arena, Budapest, Saturday 30 May 2026, 8pm BST. Dembélé has scored 19 goals and made 11 assists in 39 appearances this season.
