For a large chunk of this season, there was genuine uncertainty about whether Bruno Fernandes would be at Manchester United beyond the summer. Reports circulated linking him with moves to Europe's elite, and the player himself was not exactly dismissive of the speculation. The one thing everyone seemed to agree on was that Champions League football would be decisive. Well, Man Utd are in the Champions League next season — and suddenly, the conversation around Fernandes has shifted considerably.

Carrick's First Season: Steadier Than Expected

Michael Carrick arrived at Old Trafford under significant scrutiny. A manager who had built a reputation at Middlesbrough for patient, possession-based football, he was always going to face questions about whether his measured approach could handle the scale of Manchester United. The answer, for the most part, has been yes. United were not title challengers — Carrick himself made no bones about that — but they were rarely embarrassing. They defended with greater organisation than the previous regime, found a consistency in their away form that had been missing for years, and finished in the top four. For a first season with a squad still being reshaped, that is a reasonable platform to build from.

Fernandes: The Captain Who Stayed When It Mattered

There is a version of this season where Fernandes disengages, pushes for a move in January and drags the mood down at the club. That is not what happened. The Portuguese captain played with intensity throughout, contributed double figures in goal contributions, and was broadly the best performer in a squad with significant limitations. Whether the personal accolades fully matched expectations depends on who you ask, but in terms of commitment and professionalism, he was exemplary. Now that the Champions League ticket is confirmed, the expectation from sources close to the club is that Fernandes will be central to Carrick's plans for next season — and the manager will be given genuine resources to build around him properly.

What Happens This Summer

The real test for Carrick and United comes in the transfer market. Champions League football opens doors that would otherwise stay closed. Top targets who were hesitant about committing to a club without European football will now look differently at what Old Trafford has to offer. The board must back the manager significantly — this squad is good enough for top four but not yet good enough to challenge seriously for the title. A striker, a commanding centre-back and at least one more creative midfielder are the areas most obviously in need of investment. Get that right, and there is every reason to think United can close the gap on the clubs above them next year.

Season context: Manchester United qualified for the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League after finishing in the top five of the Premier League 2025-26. Manager: Michael Carrick (first full season). Captain: Bruno Fernandes. Transfer speculation over Fernandes' future is expected to calm following Champions League confirmation.
