The end of an era at Anfield is almost here. Mohamed Salah, 33, will leave Liverpool Football Club at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, with the Egyptian superstar confirming this week that he has "a lot of good options" to consider as he plots his next move. The departure, first confirmed back in March, still carries a sting — nine years, hundreds of goals, and memories that a generation of football fans will carry for the rest of their lives. But it appears both parties are at peace with how it ends.

Why Salah Is Leaving Anfield

The breakdown between Salah and Liverpool was not a simple contract dispute. Earlier in the season, the Egyptian was outspoken in his frustration, accusing the club of making him a scapegoat as Arne Slot's side struggled to find their early-season form. His relationship with Slot was described as non-existent, a damning verdict from a player who had delivered so much to the club over the years. FSG, to their credit, have agreed to waive the final year of his existing deal as a goodwill gesture — recognition of everything Salah contributed since arriving from Roma in 2017.

Where Could Salah End Up Next?

The list of interested parties is long and credible. A return to Serie A is among the possibilities, while clubs in the Saudi Pro League have made their interest very clear with the kind of offers that are difficult to walk away from. Major League Soccer has also been floated — the league continues to attract big names in the twilight of their careers, and Salah would be the biggest of them all. What seems certain is that whichever club lands him will get a footballer who still has plenty in the tank. He was Liverpool's joint top scorer this season despite the friction, and his pace and finishing remain as sharp as ever at 33.

The Legacy He Leaves Behind

Numbers alone do not do Salah justice at Liverpool. The goals, the assists, the Premier League golden boots — they are part of the story, not the whole of it. He arrived when Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool were building something special and he became the most visible symbol of that era. The Champions League winner's medal in 2019. The Premier League title. The Champions League final in 2022. Whatever comes next for Salah personally, the club he leaves behind will struggle to replace him on or off the pitch. An announcement on his next destination is expected within days.
