Real Madrid Are Going to Sell Vinicius Jr — And Florentino Pérez’s Decision Is the Most Shocking in Years

This is not a rumour. This is not agent noise or transfer-window posturing. According to reports from Goal.com, Real Madrid have internally agreed that Vinicius Júnior will be sold this summer. Florentino Pérez, who had publicly championed the Brazilian for years, has reportedly turned against him. The president now has a different favourite, and it is not Vinicius.

It is Kylian Mbappé. And that changes everything.

What triggered the shift

The breaking point, according to reports, came during a recent match when Vinicius disobeyed direct team instructions over a penalty. The spot-kick had been designated for Mbappé. Vinicius took it anyway. He missed. The reaction inside the dressing room and from the club’s hierarchy was reportedly severe.

This was not the first time tensions had simmered between Vinicius and Madrid’s leadership. His wage demands have been described as eye-watering — he reportedly wants to be the highest-paid player in the squad, ahead of Mbappé. That demand apparently did not go down well in the corridors of the Bernabéu.

Pérez’s son has been cited as among those urging the sale. The club’s financial calculations reportedly now point in one direction: Vinicius out, the funds reinvested, Mbappé as the undisputed centrepiece of the next era.

What Real Madrid could get for him

This is where the numbers become extraordinary. Saudi Arabian officials have been reported to be interested in a deal worth between €400 million and €500 million — figures that would shatter every transfer record in football history. Even a more conservative sale at €150 million would be a major piece of business that gives Real Madrid significant funds to reshape their squad.

The complicating factor is Vinicius’s contract, which reportedly runs until 2027. Madrid are understood to be considering a temporary extension — not because they want him to stay long-term, but because it maintains his market value and prevents him from entering the final year of his deal, which would reduce what clubs are willing to pay. It is a calculated move.

What Vinicius has said

Publicly, Vinicius has been nothing but committed. He called Real Madrid “my dream club” not long ago. He has spoken about wanting to win more trophies in white, wanting to end his career at the Bernabéu. Those statements are now being viewed differently in light of what has reportedly been decided behind the scenes.

Some observers have warned him that pursuing a “poisonous fight” over salary could backfire. The alternative — accepting Mbappé’s position at the top of the wage structure and playing alongside him — was apparently not acceptable to Vinicius. And so here we are.

PSG? Saudi Arabia? What comes next?

Earlier in the season, reports linked Vinicius with a desire to join PSG. That has since gone quiet, partly because PSG are now a Champions League powerhouse with their own expensive attacking roster to manage. Saudi Arabia remains the most credible destination given the money involved, though whether a player of Vinicius’s quality and age — he is 25 — genuinely wants to go to the Saudi Pro League at this stage of his career is another question.

There is also a scenario where a European giant makes a serious offer. A player who has been one of the three best in the world in recent seasons does not quietly disappear into the middle of the desert. Someone will pay enormous money for him.

The bigger picture

Real Madrid selling Vinicius Jr would be one of the most significant transfer stories of this era. He has been sensational at times — the goals, the dribbles, the Champions League moments that made neutral fans hold their breath. He has also been a figure of controversy throughout his career, on and off the pitch.

But the idea that Pérez, who has protected Vinicius through difficult periods before, has now switched his allegiance so completely to Mbappé that he is willing to sanction a sale — that is the genuinely staggering part of this story. It tells you everything about where Madrid’s priorities now lie, and how quickly loyalties can shift when the sums are large enough.
