Real Madrid and PSG Are After Ibrahima Konaté — and Liverpool Are Sweating

Ibrahima Konaté's contract at Liverpool runs out this summer. Real Madrid want him. PSG want him. And Liverpool, while in talks over an extension, are not willing to break their wage structure to keep him. One of the Premier League's most imposing centre-backs may be playing his final months at Anfield.

This is not a situation that crept up on Liverpool. They have known for some time that Konaté's deal was expiring, and talks over a new contract have been ongoing. The sticking point is wages. Konaté is said to be pushing for a significant pay rise, but Liverpool's hierarchy are holding firm on their internal salary structure — the same discipline they have applied in previous contract negotiations, regardless of how important the player is.

In a market where clubs routinely hand out enormous contracts to retain key players, Liverpool's approach is either admirable or risky depending on who you ask. The counter-argument is obvious: losing Konaté for nothing is worse than stretching the wage bill slightly to keep one of the best defenders in England.

Madrid Circle Again

Real Madrid have never quite gone away on this one. After they missed out on William Saliba, who rejected a move from Arsenal, Madrid turned their attention to Konaté as the next best option in their defensive recruitment. The French international fits everything they look for — physically dominant, comfortable on the ball, experienced at the highest level.

Madrid's interest is not new, but it has a different weight to it now. With Konaté available on a free transfer, the financial barrier that might have deterred them is gone. All they need to do is agree personal terms, and they are known to be among the clubs that have been in contact.

PSG Also Keen

Paris Saint-Germain have also been offered Konaté. The French club have been reshaping their squad over recent windows and a top-quality centre-back who happens to be French and available for free is exactly the kind of signing that appeals to them. PSG's ability to offer wages that most clubs cannot match makes them a serious threat in this particular chase.

Konaté would not have to leave his comfort zone culturally either — returning to a French club as a proven Premier League performer carries its own appeal.

What Liverpool Lose if He Goes

Konaté's value to Liverpool goes beyond clean sheets. He brings a physical intensity to their defending that Virgil van Dijk cannot always provide on his own. When both are fit and playing together, Liverpool have one of the most formidable defensive partnerships in European football. Losing Konaté means either promoting a younger option into that role or spending significant money in the summer to find a replacement — which may well cost more than the wage demands that triggered this standoff in the first place.

Arne Slot, who has built a Liverpool side capable of competing on all fronts this season, will be well aware of how damaging this exit could be heading into another campaign. The club won the Premier League title this season. Keeping the core together matters.

There is still time for a resolution. Contracts can be agreed quickly when both parties want it. But right now, the signs point toward a summer of uncertainty for one of Anfield's most important defenders — and two of Europe's biggest clubs are ready to take full advantage.
