Every summer there is one transfer story that takes over everything else. This summer, it is Erling Haaland.
PSG have informed Manchester City of their interest. Real Madrid have made contact with Haaland's entourage. Florentino Perez, Real's president, reportedly wants him as a long-term replacement for a forward line that needs rebuilding. And City, aware of all of this, have put a price tag on their most important player: reports suggest they would demand €200 million to even consider a sale.
That is a lot of money. It has not put anyone off.
Why everyone wants him right now
Haaland is 25 years old. He has scored more than 100 Premier League goals faster than anyone in history. He has won the league title, the Champions League and almost every individual award going. He is the most prolific striker in European football and he is still years from his peak.
PSG, fresh from eliminating Liverpool and heading to the Champions League semi-finals, are trying to build a squad capable of dominating Europe for the next decade. Haaland fits that project exactly. The problem is Real Madrid have been after him for longer, and Haaland has never hidden his admiration for the club.
The Guardiola factor
There is a wrinkle. Haaland has reportedly told Pep Guardiola that he will leave if the manager departs. Guardiola's contract at City runs until 2027, but his future beyond this season has been uncertain for months. If Guardiola goes, the chances of keeping Haaland drop dramatically.
This makes City's position complicated. They cannot simply wait and assume loyalty. If Guardiola walks away in the summer, Haaland's €200 million price tag suddenly becomes a negotiation rather than a wall.
What City get for staying put
In January 2025, Haaland signed a contract extension worth around £875,000 per week. That is a significant commitment on both sides. City did not hand out that deal expecting him to leave 18 months later. And Haaland, for his part, has been nothing but professional - scoring goals, winning titles, doing everything asked of him.
The current season is a case in point. City are locked in a title race with Arsenal heading into the final stretch. Haaland is central to everything. The idea that he could leave this summer while City are still competing for trophies would be a significant blow to the club's short-term ambitions as much as the long-term ones.
PSG vs Real Madrid — who wins?
If Haaland does move, the two clubs most likely to sign him are essentially opposites. PSG want to spend, build fast and win now. Real Madrid want to add him to a generational project that already includes Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr and several others.
The money is not the issue for either club. The question is which project appeals more to a 25-year-old striker at the height of his powers. Reports suggest Haaland has always dreamed of playing for Real Madrid. That is difficult for PSG to compete with regardless of how much they offer.
For now, City are holding firm. The £875,000-a-week contract, the €200 million price tag, the ongoing title race - all of it points toward Haaland still being at the Etihad next season. But in football, that is never a guarantee, and this summer is going to be a long one for everyone involved.
Erling Haaland is contracted to Manchester City until 2034. City are believed to value him at €200 million. Both PSG and Real Madrid have registered interest ahead of the summer transfer window.
