David Moyes was in no mood to hide his frustration after Everton were beaten 2-1 by West Ham United in a match that left the Toffees manager convinced his side had been on the wrong end of one of the most baffling refereeing decisions of the Premier League season.
The flashpoint came in the 68th minute when West Ham were awarded a penalty after the ball struck the arm of Everton defender James Tarkowski. From pitchside it looked accidental, with Tarkowski's arm tucked close to his body — and replays appeared to back that view up entirely. But referee Simon Hooper pointed to the spot without hesitation, and Jarrod Bowen converted to put the Hammers 2-1 ahead.
Moyes Slams the Decision
Moyes made no attempt to soften his language when speaking to reporters after the final whistle. He said the penalty decision was impossible to understand and that his players deserved more from the match. He pointed out that Everton had worked hard to get back into the game after falling behind and that a single refereeing call had undone all of that effort in the cruelest way possible.
The Everton boss also questioned whether the handball law as currently written is doing the game any favours. He argued that a ball striking a defender's arm at close range, with no time to react, should never be considered a penalty, and that the existing guidance leaves too much room for interpretation.
VAR Fails to Intervene
What made the situation worse in Moyes' eyes was that VAR did not overturn the decision. The video review team took a brief look at the incident before confirming the on-field call. Moyes suggested that the review was too quick and that not enough scrutiny was applied to whether the arm was in an unnatural position — the standard required for a handball penalty.
Everton had actually opened the scoring through Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the first half, and the team looked capable of holding on for three vital points. West Ham levelled before the interval through a Mohammed Kudus strike, but Everton had regrouped well and were the better side for long stretches of the second period before the penalty changed everything.
Relegation Fears Remain
The defeat leaves Everton in a precarious position in the Premier League table, with only a handful of games remaining. Every point is crucial and dropping three at Goodison Park against a side also fighting for survival makes the situation feel even more uncomfortable. Moyes will need his squad to pick themselves up quickly, as there is little margin for error going into the final stretch of the campaign.
What is not in question is the effort the players put in. Everton pressed hard, created chances, and showed plenty of fight throughout the ninety minutes. If results go their way over the final weeks, there is still every reason to believe they can survive.
