Every summer, the Championship delivers a handful of players who arrive in the Premier League and immediately make people wonder why nobody noticed them sooner. The scouting is better than it's ever been, so the window for truly overlooked talent has narrowed — but it hasn't closed completely.
This summer, two names are generating serious Premier League interest before the season has even finished: Femi Azeez of Millwall and Hayden Hackney of Middlesbrough. Both are already being monitored by multiple top-flight clubs. Neither should be a surprise at this point, but the Championship has a way of keeping brilliant players invisible until they suddenly aren't.
Femi Azeez — the winger who's carried Millwall all season
At 24, Azeez has had his breakthrough season in the most emphatic terms possible. Eight goals and seven assists in the Championship this term, with Millwall pushing for automatic promotion — numbers that put him in the Team of the Season conversation and have had Premier League scouts making repeat visits to The Den.
What makes him interesting isn't just the stats. Azeez has a directness to his game that feels natural rather than coached — the kind of player who takes defenders on not because the system demands it but because he can. His pace is genuine, his decision-making in the final third has improved sharply this season, and his contribution from wide positions goes well beyond conventional wing play.
Millwall manager Alex Neil has been understandably reluctant to attach any "little old Millwall" label to his team's ambitions — and with Azeez firing on all cylinders, the Lions have been anything but little this season. Whether they go up automatically or via the play-offs, Azeez's future at this level looks settled. The only question is which club.
Hayden Hackney — Championship Player of the Season
If Azeez is the flashier name, Hackney is the one that proper football people get genuinely excited about. The 23-year-old Middlesbrough midfielder was named the Championship's Player of the Season — a significant recognition for a player who has been consistent, intelligent and quietly exceptional across a full campaign.
Hackney plays with a composure that you don't normally associate with a player his age in the Championship. He controls rhythm. He reads pressing situations early and finds exits under pressure. His defensive contribution — interceptions, recoveries, positioning — makes him look like a player already ready for a step up, and the clubs circling him from the Premier League clearly think so too.
He's also a boyhood Middlesbrough fan, which adds a layer of emotional complexity to any potential departure. Those stories don't always end happily for the player or the club, but they do tend to generate enormous public goodwill when handled well.
Frank Lampard's Coventry and the wider picture
The Championship this season has been genuinely competitive. Coventry City, under Frank Lampard — yes, that Frank Lampard, nominated for Championship Manager of the Season — have pushed hard at the top end. Imran Louza at Watford (seven goals, nine assists) is another player who will attract summer attention. The division has produced real quality this term.
For Premier League clubs watching the relegation battle unfold — with Wolves already down, Spurs and West Ham still sweating — there's also the practical reality that at least one or two clubs dropping to the Championship this summer will suddenly be competing for some of the same players. The market moves fast, and the clubs that do their homework now will be ahead of the scramble.
Azeez and Hackney are worth the homework. The Championship has been saying so all season.
