The situation is moving fast. Anthony Gordon wants out of Newcastle before the World Cup kicks off in June, Bayern Munich are circling, and Newcastle have put a number on it: £75 million. Whether Bayern blink first or dig in for a lower fee is the question that's going to dominate the next few weeks of transfer news.

Gordon, 24, has been one of the most consistent wingers in the Premier League over the past two seasons and has forced his way into the England World Cup squad picture. He knows this summer is a massive window for him — playing for a Champions League club going into a World Cup is a very different proposition to representing a Newcastle side that has been trying to stay on the right side of PSR rules.

Gordon Is Open to the Move

Reports from multiple sources confirm that Gordon is open to swapping the Premier League for the Bundesliga. Bayern's plan has been to agree terms with the player's representatives first — essentially locking in personal terms before launching a formal approach to Newcastle. It's a strategy that's worked for them before, and it puts pressure on the selling club to either engage in talks or risk their star asset agitating.

There's a sense that Gordon has been given no assurances about Champions League football at Newcastle anytime soon. The club's financial situation means they've been unable to build the squad depth that Eddie Howe wanted, and the summer is likely to see more sales than arrivals at St. James' Park. That reality isn't lost on Gordon.

Newcastle's Position: £75m or Nothing

Newcastle have drawn a firm line. They want £75 million for their prized winger, and that's a record sale for the club if they get it. Given they signed Gordon from Everton for around £45m in January 2023, they'd be looking at a tidy profit — but the number is high enough to give Bayern pause.

Earlier reports had suggested Bayern were looking at something closer to £50 million, which is the gap that currently exists between the two clubs' valuations. Newcastle aren't expected to budge much, if at all. They've already lost Wissa to a permanent deal and are facing the prospect of losing Sandro Tonali and Tino Livramento in the same window. Each departure needs to add up, and they can't afford to undersell their best player on top of everything else.

The Full Newcastle Exodus

Gordon isn't the only one being linked with a move away from Tyneside this summer. Sandro Tonali, whose form has been exceptional since returning from his gambling ban, has attracted serious interest from Serie A and Premier League clubs. Tino Livramento, the right-back who has developed into one of the best young defenders in the country, is also being monitored. It's shaping up to be one of the more painful summers for Newcastle fans in recent memory.

The PSR math is brutal and unavoidable. Newcastle simply cannot keep pace with the top four without selling. The question for Howe and the board is whether they can replace the quality they're losing, or whether the club is essentially entering a reset phase ahead of the new stadium project and whatever financial headroom that eventually brings.

What Gordon Offers Bayern

Vincent Kompany sees Gordon as competition and cover for Luis Diaz on the left — a player who can play both wings, get in behind defenders with his pace, and chip in with goals and assists. The Bundesliga has become increasingly attractive to Premier League players in recent windows, partly because of the pace of the game and partly because of the Champions League regularity that the top German clubs offer.

Gordon already has World Cup ambitions. Playing for Bayern Munich in 2026/27 — assuming England go deep in the summer tournament and he has a good tournament — could make him one of the most marketable players in European football by this time next year. The timing makes sense for everyone except Newcastle.

What Happens Next

Bayern are expected to formalize their approach to Newcastle in the coming weeks. The player's camp is already engaged. The gap in valuations is real but not unbridgeable — somewhere between £60m and £75m is where this probably lands if it happens. The more interesting question is whether Newcastle have any other high-quality options in mind to replace Gordon, because if they don't, the whole move starts to look more like a forced sale than a strategic one.

Gordon himself reportedly wants clarity before the World Cup squad travels to America. That gives everyone about six weeks to get a deal sorted. Don't be surprised if this one moves quickly.
