WALSALL SIGN CHARLTON FORWARD DANIEL KANU ON SEASON-LONG LOAN
Walsall have strengthened their attacking options with the signing of young forward Daniel Kanu from Charlton Athletic. The 20-year-old arrives with valuable League One experience and a reputation as one of Charlton’s brightest academy products.
Kanu came through the youth ranks at The Valley and earned his first-team debut in February 2022. Over the following two and a half seasons, he became a regular feature in Charlton’s matchday squads, recording 59 league appearances and netting seven goals. His pace, work rate, and willingness to press from the front made him a popular figure with fans and coaches alike, while also earning him senior international recognition with Sierra Leone.
Eager for consistent minutes to aid his development, Kanu explained that conversations with Saddlers boss [manager’s name] played a huge role in his decision to move.
"I’ve been speaking with the gaffer here throughout pre-season, and he’s shown a lot of belief in me," he told Walsall’s official website. "This is the right environment to get regular games, but also a place where I know I’ll be pushed to improve. I’m hungry to show what I can do and help the team this season."
Walsall, who narrowly missed out on promotion after a heartbreaking League Two play-off final defeat to AFC Wimbledon last term, are looking to go one step further this year. After four matches, they sit 11th in the table with two wins and two defeats, and Kanu’s arrival adds extra depth and energy to their frontline.
Known for his versatility, Kanu can operate as a central striker or in wider attacking roles, giving the Saddlers greater flexibility in the final third. His ambition and international pedigree make him an exciting addition to a squad determined to mount another promotion challenge.
The move also represents a fresh start for Kanu, who now has the platform to turn his potential into consistent performances at senior level. For Walsall, it signals intent: backing youth, investing in talent, and building a squad capable of competing at the top end of the division.
