IPSWICH TOWN SIGN LEICESTER MIDFIELDER KASEY MCATEER FOR £12M
Ipswich Town have completed the signing of Kasey McAteer from Leicester City, with the fee believed to be in the region of £12 million. The 23-year-old Republic of Ireland international has penned a four-year contract at Portman Road, becoming one of the Tractor Boys’ most notable additions of the summer window.
McAteer leaves Leicester having made 56 senior appearances for the Foxes, including 18 outings in the Premier League last season, in which he registered eight goals. Despite his progress, he found himself on the bench for Leicester’s opening Championship fixtures this term, paving the way for a fresh challenge in East Anglia.
Ironically, Ipswich fans will remember McAteer from last May when he scored in Leicester’s 2-0 victory over them in the Premier League—a match that came shortly before both clubs were relegated.
Reflecting on his move, McAteer expressed his excitement about joining a club on the rise:
“This is a very attractive project, and I want to be part of what Ipswich are building. The aim is to get promoted again, and that’s what we’ll push for every single day. Personally, I want to keep improving and bring the best version of myself to the team.”
From Academy Graduate to International Recognition
McAteer first joined Leicester’s academy as an eight-year-old, gradually climbing through the youth ranks before breaking into the first team. Loan spells at Forest Green Rovers and AFC Wimbledon toughened him up for senior football, and by the 2023-24 season he was a regular, featuring 26 times as Leicester won promotion back to the Premier League.
McAteer’s rise at club level was soon mirrored on the international stage, as he earned his first cap for the Republic of Ireland in September 2024 during a high-profile clash with England in Dublin. The occasion marked a major milestone
A Key Addition for Ipswich
Manager Kieran McKenna has been keen to add depth and versatility to his midfield, and McAteer fits the bill perfectly. Known for his work rate, direct running and eye for goal, the midfielder can operate across attacking positions, making him a valuable option for Ipswich as they target a swift return to the Premier League.
The deal marks another signal of intent from Ipswich’s ownership and recruitment team, who are determined to ensure the club not only stabilises but thrives after their return to the top flight.
