SHEFFIELD UNITED SIGN BEN GODFREY ON LOAN FROM IPSWICH TOWN
Ben Godfrey has returned to his Yorkshire roots after difficult spells with Atalanta and Ipswich, as he looks to reignite his career at Bramall Lane.
The 27-year-old centre-back made just a single Serie A appearance for Atalanta last season, having joined the Italian side from Everton in a £10 million deal. His struggles for minutes continued during a loan move to Ipswich Town, where he featured only five times in the second half of the campaign.
Now, Godfrey will be hoping to establish himself quickly at United, who are in urgent need of defensive reinforcements following Anel Ahmedhodžić’s £15.6m switch to Feyenoord earlier this summer. His debut could even come as soon as Saturday, with the Blades preparing to face Millwall.
Godfrey began his career with his hometown club York City, where he captained the youth side before breaking into the senior team. Spells at Norwich City and Everton followed, with the Toffees paying £25m for his services in 2020. Despite showing early promise at Goodison Park and even collecting two England caps, his career stalled after moving to Serie A last summer.
Speaking to the club website, Godfrey expressed his excitement about returning home:
"I’m a Yorkshire lad, so it’s brilliant to be back home and I’m looking forward to getting started. The manager has some really good ideas, and I think this season will bring positives we can all look forward to. I’ve trained hard at Atalanta and feel sharp, so I’m ready to go."
United, who sit second-bottom of the Championship after back-to-back defeats to open the season, will be counting on Godfrey’s leadership and experience to help stabilise their back line and lift them away from early-season trouble.
