A flat first half, a six-minute spell after the restart, and Plymouth Argyle are top of League One. Two quick goals from Bim Pepple and Will Evans gave Tom Cleverley's side a 2-0 win at Leyton Orient on Saturday and put them back on top of the table, a week after a home defeat by Burton had knocked them off course.
Cleverley wasted no time pointing out what it meant. Asked about the result, he said that was how you respond to a home defeat, and the manner of the win backed him up.
A scrappy opening 45 minutes
Orient had the first real sight of goal. Fin Stevens shot wide of the upright after only three minutes, and at the other end Oliver Irow forced Nathan Baxter into a stretching palm-away. After that, the half drifted into the kind of game that only managers enjoy. Plenty of challenges, few chances, and not much football worth remembering.
If Plymouth were worried about a repeat of last week, they did not show it. They stayed compact, kept Orient away from anything dangerous and waited for a moment to arrive in the second half.
Two goals in six minutes
It came from a corner. In the 52nd minute a scramble in the Orient box dropped to Bradley Ibrahim, who put the ball across goal, and Pepple was on hand to poke it home. That was his fifth league goal of the campaign. Soon afterwards Ronan Curtis delivered a deep cross from the right and Evans met it with a header that went into the net, his third of the season.
The two goals arrived close enough together that Orient had barely processed the first before the second went in. They pushed hard for a way back. Stevens volleyed at Murphy Cooper in the Plymouth goal in the 68th minute, and Cooper dealt with it, but the home side never looked like turning the game around.
What it means for the table
Top spot in early October proves little by itself, and Argyle will know it. The Burton defeat a week ago showed how quickly things can wobble in this division. But a clean sheet away from home and a response of this kind is exactly the sort of evidence managers look for.
For Orient, it was a missed chance to make a statement at home. They created enough early on to feel they could have taken something, yet they could not break down a well-organised defence once Plymouth went in front. Both sides will find out soon enough whether this was a blip or a trend.
