Bruno Fernandes has tried to calm the storm around Cristiano Ronaldo, and he did it without picking a side. Speaking at a Portugal news conference on Saturday, the Manchester United midfielder said Ronaldo remains the country's greatest footballing figure, even though the 41-year-old has walked out on the squad this week.
The row is simple to describe and hard to settle. Ronaldo left camp after coach Jorge Jesus told him he would not start against Denmark in the Nations League. Portugal won that game 4-2 without him, and now nobody is quite sure what happens next.
What Fernandes said
Fernandes revealed he had spoken to Ronaldo directly. His message, repeated in public, was that whatever happens from here, Ronaldo will always be the greatest symbol of the national team, of Portuguese football and of the country. He pointed to what the forward has done for Portugal and across the world, and said his place among the best players of all time is secure, as is his place in the hearts of the Portuguese people.
The captain's real plea was for unity. There were no divisions inside the squad, he said, and the team would stay one group whatever noise came from outside. He asked the country not to split itself into camps, to respect everyone involved, and to give Ronaldo the respect he deserves whether people like him more or less. It was the language of a man who has taken the armband from a legend and does not want to be seen as having taken more than that.
How it came to this
Ronaldo is Portugal's record scorer and record cap holder, with 146 goals in 234 appearances, and his name is on Euro 2016 and two Nations League titles. Portugal won the competition in 2019 and hold it now, after beating Spain on penalties in the 2025 final following a 2-2 draw in which he scored one of the goals.
This summer's World Cup ended in the last 16, a 1-0 loss to Spain, the eventual champions. Roberto Martinez was criticised for rarely substituting Ronaldo even when he was playing poorly, and Jesus, who had coached him at Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, replaced Martinez for the Nations League. Ronaldo played the first 67 minutes of the 1-0 home win over Wales, was an unused substitute in the 2-1 win in Norway, and then left before the Denmark match. His international future now looks uncertain.
What comes next for Jesus's side
On the pitch, things are going well. Portugal lead Group A4 with nine points from nine, and they host Norway in Porto on Sunday. They finish the group phase next month at home to Denmark on 14 November and away in Wales three days later. A top-two finish would put them in the March quarter-finals, with the semi-finals and final in June.
Jesus called Ronaldo a symbol of Portugal and said there would be time to talk about him after Sunday's match. For now he wants his players thinking about Norway, whom he rates as one of the five best teams in Europe. That is the sensible approach, though the questions about Ronaldo will not go away just because the coach would like them to.
