Mukasa Strike Lifts West Ham Past Swansea and Into Second

Swansea City arrived at their own ground as Championship leaders and with an unbeaten home record. They left it having lost to West Ham United, who climbed to second place on the strength of one first-half goal from a teenager on loan from Manchester City. Divine Mukasa's calm finish was the difference in a tight, tense contest that both sides could have won.

The only goal came from a mistake

For long stretches there was hardly a sign of a chance. Then, 11 minutes before half-time, Marko Stamenic was dispossessed in his own half and West Ham pounced. Mohamadou Kante burst into the penalty area and squared for Mukasa, who guided the ball past a helpless Lawrence Vigouroux from 10 yards. It was the first shot of the game at either end, and it was Mukasa's third league goal in nine appearances for the club.

That finish prompted more intent from Swansea. Ronald unleashed a fierce drive that deflected just off target, and captain Ben Cabango thumped a shot against the bar after Josh Tymon's free-kick was not cleared. Midway through the second half another set-piece dropped to Cabango, and this time he dragged it wastefully wide. Adam Idah also hooked a chance off target.

Vigouroux keeps Swansea in it

West Ham might easily have won more comfortably. Vigouroux, the Swansea goalkeeper, twice denied Jarrod Bowen early in the second half and then stopped Pablo when the striker was through on goal. Without him it would have been a heavier afternoon. The Hammers have now won six of their 11 second-tier games since relegation from the Premier League, they are unbeaten in nine league matches since a shock home loss to Charlton Athletic in mid-August, and they are a point behind Swansea. Their 30 league goals in 11 games are the most in the top four divisions of English football.

What it means for Swansea

Swansea had taken 23 points from their first 10 league games, their best start in 103 years, and they played in front of a new record crowd at the Swansea.com Stadium of 20,973. This was their first home defeat since April and only their second loss of the season. Vitor Matos said the game was decided in the boxes and that small things matter in a tight match: "Unfortunately for us we didn't score." Nuno Espirito Santo praised his players' commitment and unity after what he called a demanding week.

For a club few expected to be in the automatic promotion conversation, the response now matters. West Ham, widely tipped as title favourites, are exactly where they expect to be.
