Kilmarnock needed less than a minute to start the party and an extra push late on to finish it. Greg Kiltie scored twice, including the winner, as Neil McCann's side beat Motherwell 3-2 at Rugby Park, lifting themselves off the bottom of the Scottish Premiership and condemning the visitors to a fifth league defeat in a row.

A goalkeeper's gift inside a minute

Motherwell could hardly have begun worse. Goalkeeper Alex Paulsen played a poor pass, Tyreece John-Jules pounced and teed up Kiltie, who smashed his shot into the bottom corner. The goal came after a minute. Motherwell responded well enough, and after 17 minutes they were level. Emmanuel Longelo's cross found Seb Palmer-Houlden in the box, his shot was saved by Calum Ferrie, and Alex Lowry raced in to fire home the rebound.

Red card drama and a quick swing

The second half started in a hurry. George Stanger was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Lowry, and Kilmarnock looked to be down to 10 men, but referee Calum Scott went to the monitor and downgraded it to a booking. Motherwell then took the lead for the first time when Palmer-Houlden turned in Ibrahim Said's cross from close range. It lasted two minutes. John-Jules levelled with a left-footed strike into the bottom corner, and Kiltie put Kilmarnock back in front when he latched on to Jamie Brandon's cross and fired low into the far corner.

What the numbers said

Kilmarnock had 16 shots, six on target, and created three big chances, comfortably outperforming an expected-goals figure of 1.51. Motherwell's own xG was 2.44, with 15 shots, seven on target, and a Tawanda Maswanhise effort off the crossbar. They simply defended too loosely and gave the ball away too easily. Manager Alfred Johansson was blunt afterwards. "We conceded goals in a way that was unacceptable," he said, adding that the team cannot rely on scoring three away from home to win points.

McCann, who had praised his team's showing in last week's 3-1 defeat to Rangers while insisting he wanted results, got one. He said his players now believe they can win games, though he was keen not to get carried away. Kilmarnock are level on points with 10th-placed Motherwell, and Hibernian's defeat by Falkirk left them off the bottom. Motherwell's five straight losses equal their longest run since January and February 2025, and last season's runners-up Hearts visit next weekend.

Match facts: Kilmarnock 3-2 Motherwell, Scottish Premiership, Rugby Park, Saturday 17 October 2026. Goals: Kiltie (1st minute, and the winner in the second half), John-Jules (two minutes after Motherwell went ahead) for Kilmarnock; Lowry (17'), Palmer-Houlden (second half) for Motherwell.
