Chelsea did not so much beat Tottenham as run them over once the second half got going. Lauren James and Ellie Carpenter each scored twice, two substitutes added a goal apiece, and the Blues won 6-2 at Stamford Bridge to go top of the Women's Super League with a fifth straight league victory.
Spurs level, then Chelsea take over
James opened the scoring by catching Spurs defender Toko Koga in possession just outside her own box. She feinted, drove at goal and clipped the ball past Lize Kop from a tight angle. Tottenham did not fold. They pressed for a spell and deserved their equaliser before the break, Matilda Vinberg heading in at the far post from Julie Blakstad's cross.
After the interval the north Londoners were on top for a while. Then Alyssa Thompson, the United States attacker, drove into the box and pulled a low cross back into a dangerous area, and the advancing Carpenter turned it into the net.
Nine minutes that settled it
What followed was ruthless. Four minutes after Carpenter's goal James was played in by Lucy Bronze and curled a superb finish across Kop into the far corner. Substitute Sjoeke Nusken had been on the pitch for only five minutes when she added a fourth with a powerful strike. Chelsea had scored three times in nine minutes, and Martin Ho's side were done.
Maika Hamano then added the fifth with a swerving 30-yard strike. Signe Gaupset pulled one back for Spurs late on after winning the ball on the edge of Chelsea's box, but Carpenter had the final word, scoring a sixth in added time.
Bompastor's record keeps growing
The win came in Sonia Bompastor's 50th game in the competition, and the numbers are striking. She now has 125 points from her first 50 WSL matches, more than any manager in the league's history has managed over the same stretch. Chelsea sit top of the table with five consecutive wins behind them.
For Spurs the picture is less comfortable. They remain fourth, but they have played a game more than most of their rivals and have now lost two in a row. It was a game they were competitive in for long spells, and it still ended in a heavy defeat.
