Jordan Henderson scored twice on his Stamford Bridge debut as Chelsea thrashed Bournemouth 5-1 on Saturday, the 36-year-old midfielder opening the scoring after barely a minute and a half and closing it with a free-kick from 25 yards. Joao Pedro added two more and Morgan Rogers one, in a game that was effectively settled before the clock reached three minutes.

Two goals before Bournemouth had settled

Chelsea's first shot of the game went in. Cole Palmer, who had put pen to paper on a new contract until 2034 only hours earlier, slipped a pass through and Henderson curled his finish in off the inside of the post in the second minute. Eighty-four seconds later he played in Rogers, whose cross-shot was flicked over Djordje Petrovic by defender Antonio Silva. The goal was checked by the video assistant referee and given to Rogers, his fourth of the season.

Bournemouth had given the ball away too often in those opening exchanges and it cost them. They steadied a little after that. Rayan flashed a shot over and then had a one-on-one saved in the 35th minute, Ryan Christie was denied by Emiliano Martinez, and Silva headed at the keeper just before the break. It was 2-0 at half-time and it could have been closer.

Pedro finishes it off

Not for long. Bournemouth brought on Ben Gannon-Doak at half-time and were 3-0 down within 30 seconds, after Silva made another mistake in his own box and Pedro Neto reacted quickly. Joao Pedro fired into the top right-hand corner. Evanilson pulled one back in the 51st minute when a clearance from Moises Caicedo ricocheted off him from a corner, which gave the visitors a brief reason to hope.

It lasted until the 67th minute. Pep Chavarria crossed from the left and Joao Pedro tapped in his second. Henderson then took a free-kick 25 yards out in the 70th minute and bent it past Petrovic to complete the scoring. Alonso's team had needed one shot to start the game and needed little more than that to finish it.

Caicedo and Henderson, together at last

The quieter story of the afternoon was in midfield. Chelsea had tried four different midfield pairings and named the same one in consecutive matches only once. This was the first time Henderson and Caicedo started together. Caicedo had played just 14 minutes all season after a calf problem returned, and when he went down in the 30th minute after a collision involving Palmer and Christie, the Stamford Bridge crowd applauded him back to his feet with some relief.

Henderson had been recovering from an arm injury sustained at the World Cup when he fell jumping over an advertising board during celebrations. He impressed in his first full appearance for the club in the win at Brentford before the international break, and was signed as one of three players over 30, with Danny Welbeck and Martinez, to add leadership to the Premier League's youngest squad last season. Chelsea had conceded a league-high 12 goals in their first five matches and allowed only one here.

Bournemouth's problems under Rose

For Bournemouth the result was another low point. They have yet to win a Premier League game under new manager Marco Rose, and they stay outside the relegation zone only on goal difference. It is only the second time they have failed to win any of their opening six league games, the other being under Rose's predecessor Andoni Iraola. Their earlier winless run had been about late goals conceded. This time it was early ones.

Chelsea, with their first win in four matches, move into the top five.
