Cole Palmer has signed a new Chelsea contract on improved terms that runs until 2034. He was already tied to the club until 2033, so the headline here is not really the extra year. It is the raise, and what the club is signalling by handing it to him now.

Palmer is 24.

He arrived from Manchester City in 2023 for £42.5m, signed his previous deal only two years ago, and has quietly become one of the players the dressing room looks to. "Chelsea means a lot to me and I think the club is going in the right direction, so I'm delighted to sign," he said. "Speaking to the owners, to the sporting directors and obviously the manager, they gave me a lot of confidence so it was only right to sign."

One of the longest deals in the league

Very few players in the Premier League are contracted as far out as 2034. Erling Haaland is one. So are Palmer's own team-mates Joao Pedro and Geovany Quenda. That list is short, and the fact that two of the three names on it are Chelsea players tells you something about how the club has chosen to operate: long contracts, early, with the wage structure held together rather than blown up every time somebody has a good season.

Joao Pedro signed through to 2034 in August. Pedro Neto agreed a fresh six-year deal last month. Palmer's renewal is the next one in that sequence, and it covers both ends of the squad, rewarding the established players while keeping the emerging ones from drifting towards the exit.

Back to the player he was

The timing matters because last season was difficult. Palmer carried a niggling groin problem for most of it and later admitted he had played through something he "probably shouldn't have done". He sought specialist advice on whether surgery was needed. The lack of availability cost him a place in England's World Cup squad over the summer, which for a player of his age and standing is about as painful as a non-injury injury gets.

He has four goals and two assists from seven matches this season, involvement in six goals in seven, and has played more minutes than any other Chelsea player. He also missed England's most recent camp, which prompted Thomas Tuchel to remark that he "misses too many opportunities".

Alonso wants him fit, not rushed

Xabi Alonso has been careful on that point. "Absolutely. He's committed, but he needs to be fully fit to play," the Chelsea manager said of Palmer's England future. "And when he's fully fit, he will enjoy his minutes. We need him in that moment. The club and the national team. He trained over the past week and has been feeling better, but we didn't want to rush him." Alonso confirmed Palmer was expected to be available against Bournemouth.

On the pitch Palmer has struck up a useful relationship with Joao Pedro, and renewed an older one with Morgan Rogers, his self-described "best friend in football", who arrived from Aston Villa this summer for a club-record £117m. Palmer was one of the few people who knew that deal was happening before it became public. Chelsea sit 10th after five league matches with 12 goals conceded, so the rebuild is a long way from finished. Tying down the player it is being built around is a sensible place to start.

Transfer context: Cole Palmer, 24, England international, has signed improved terms at Chelsea running to 2034, extending a deal that previously ran to 2033. He joined from Manchester City in 2023 for £42.5m and has four goals and two assists in seven matches this season.
