Luxembourg went a goal behind in Bulgaria inside twenty minutes on Saturday and won anyway. Leandro Barreiro drew them level before half-time, Vincent Thill settled it just past the hour, and a country that used to treat a draw as a result walked off with three points from a trip that would once have been written off before kick-off.
Bulgaria start the way they needed to
Atanas Chandarov put the hosts in front on 18 minutes and for a while the evening followed the script the home crowd wanted. Bulgaria have not had many nights worth remembering lately and an early goal against a team still carrying the reputation of European football's whipping boys was the obvious platform.
They could not build on it. The lead lasted less than twenty minutes.
Barreiro levels, Thill decides it
Barreiro equalised on 37 and the half ended at 1-1, which changed the complexion of the whole thing. Bulgaria had to come out and win a game they had been leading; Luxembourg only had to stay patient. Thill got the second on 65 and that was the match.
There is a familiar name attached to the winner. Vincent is the youngest of the three Thill brothers who have carried this national team for years, and the goal is the kind he has scored before in exactly this sort of fixture, at the point where the opposition start to worry rather than the point where they are already broken.
Luxembourg are not a surprise any more
The honest way to read this is that the gap has closed. Luxembourg have spent a decade taking points off sides ranked well above them, and the reaction to a result like this ought to be less about the upset and more about Bulgaria, who conceded twice at home after taking the lead and now have a group to repair.
Beating a nation of that size away from home used to be a headline in itself. It is starting to read as a result.
