Every summer there is one name that sits on the board at half a dozen clubs for months before anybody admits it out loud. This year it may be Virgil van Dijk, and the reason is simple arithmetic: Liverpool's captain turns into a free agent when this season ends, and Real Madrid have apparently noticed.
That is the lead item in Wednesday's papers. Mundo Deportivo report that Madrid are considering a move for the 35-year-old and are content to wait rather than pay.
Nobody at Anfield will be surprised. Interest in Van Dijk has never stopped, and it never will while he is playing at this level, but the wrinkle this time is the price, because there isn't one, and a defender of that standing available for nothing is the single most attractive thing in the market. What matters is whether Liverpool get the renewal signed before the phone calls start.
Manchester United's two jobs
United are working on both ends of the pitch at once. Jean-Philippe Mateta, the 29-year-old Crystal Palace and France forward, is described by TeamTalk as a target as they look for more from the attack. The same outlet has Bayern Munich playing down the idea that they want Jordan Pickford, the 32-year-old Everton and England goalkeeper.
Closer to home, Football Insider say United plan to offer Luke Shaw new terms. Shaw is 31 and out of contract in the summer, which puts him in the same bracket as Van Dijk at a rather different price point.
Letting him walk for nothing would be an odd way to save money.
Bayern shopping in Catalonia, Spurs shopping in Bavaria
Sport in Spain report that Bayern are looking at Jules Kounde. The France defender is 27 and has started the season out of favour at Barcelona. That sort of situation tends to resolve itself quickly once a club of Bayern's size gets involved.
The same paper has Tottenham interested in Kim Min-jae, the 29-year-old South Korea defender, from Bayern. Taken together, those two stories would give the German champions a busy few months at centre-back.
One last shift for Darmian
And the smallest item on the page is the one worth a second look. Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Matteo Darmian, 36, was due to begin training with Bologna on Wednesday after being released by Inter Milan at the end of last season. Former Manchester United defenders do not usually get another Serie A season at that age. Darmian appears to be getting one.
