Bayern Munich want Michael Olise tied down until 2032. Olise, according to Bild, will sign it on one condition: put a release clause in, and make it £170m.
That is not a negotiating position dressed up as a principle. It is the whole point. Olise is 24, his current deal runs to 2029, and the reason Bayern were able to say no to interest in the summer is precisely that his contract contains no clause. Adding one hands the decision back to the player. Bayern know that. So does he.
Why Bayern blocked him before
Real Madrid are the club in the background here. Bild's report follows earlier suggestions that Olise discussed a possible move with Kylian Mbappe and Aurelien Tchouameni during the 2026 World Cup, a tournament in which he broke Pele's record for assists. Bayern refused to entertain a sale, and with no clause in the contract, refusing was straightforward.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge set out the club's thinking plainly enough: "Olise is under contract until 2029. At some point, the club will have to sit down with him and present a suitable offer. He is exceptional in his position." That is a club signalling that it intends to pay, not a club signalling that it intends to sell.
The money on the table
The reported offer takes Olise from around £12m a year to £21m, which would put him level with Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala at the top of the Bayern wage structure. For a player who cost £45m from Crystal Palace in 2024, that is a substantial re-rating in two years, and by most measures a deserved one.
But wages are the easy part of this negotiation. Bayern have historically resisted release clauses, partly because one clause tends to lead to another once the rest of the squad finds out. A £170m figure is high enough to look like a deterrent and low enough that Madrid, of all clubs, could reach it.
What happens next
Nothing quickly. Olise has three years left, so Bayern are under no pressure this season and can let the talks sit.
The risk is the one every big club recognises. A clause negotiation that drags on is a contract getting shorter in the background, and eventually the balance of power flips.
If Bayern hold firm and Olise signs anyway, they have won. If they hold firm and he does not, they will be having the same conversation in 2028 with a player who has two years left instead of three.
