Chelsea beat Arsenal 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday and the goal was almost the least interesting thing about it. What stood out was the forty or so minutes when Chelsea did not have the ball and did not look remotely bothered about it.
That is not how last season went. Their six-year hold on the Women's Super League ended, Manchester City went past them, and doubt got in. Sonia Bompastor had won an unbeaten domestic treble in her first year in charge and then watched the follow-up unravel.
Three clean sheets and 315 minutes
The win extended Chelsea's WSL unbeaten run to 12 games and left them two points behind leaders Manchester City. It was also a third consecutive clean sheet, a stretch of 315 minutes without conceding, and that number is the actual story of their start.
They began the season tamely enough, drawing 1-1 at home to Aston Villa after dominating the game, wasteful in front of goal and undone by a mistake at the back. Familiar. Three straight wins since have turned the performances into points.
Bompastor was specific about what she asked for against Arsenal. "We came into this game well prepared. We knew we would have moments in the game where we were not in control. We prepared for those moments. We knew exactly where we wanted them to take the ball and where to leave some spaces. We were really strong mentally and physically." Sides that lose titles usually cannot say that about a derby.
Walsh, Potter and a striker who presses
Keira Walsh was the best player on the pitch. Her shot was parried into Alyssa Thompson's path for the only goal, but the wider point is the partnership she has struck with 20-year-old Lexi Potter, which has freed Walsh to get further up the pitch. Bompastor called the 29-year-old "a boss on the pitch" when she plays at that level.
Melvine Malard has changed the shape of the press. The French striker arrived from Manchester United in the summer, missed the first two games with a minor injury, scored on her debut against Birmingham City and gave Arsenal a difficult evening. Walsh's description of her is worth quoting because it is about work rather than goals. "She's massive for us. She puts in work off the ball and sets off the press. Her awareness of people around her and her ability... She's an incredible striker and she will be very good for us."
Ellie Carpenter keeps overlapping. And Katie McCabe, who crossed north London to south west London this summer, has brought an edge that Chelsea did not always have last season. Signing the aggression out of a rival's dressing room is a tidy piece of business.
Arsenal have a bigger problem
One win in four WSL games and two goals scored. Arsenal sit seventh, seven points behind City, and the summer recruitment that had plenty of people tipping them as the main challengers has not yet produced anything resembling a forward line. They face Manchester City on Sunday at 16:30 BST, which is not the fixture you want when you cannot score.
Chelsea, meanwhile, look like a side that has remembered what it is for. Whether that carries them past City over a full season is a different question, and City have not given them much reason to think it will. But writing Chelsea off in September would be a strange thing to do twice.
