One euro. That is the price agreed for Girondins de Bordeaux, a club that has won six French titles and reached a Uefa Cup final, and the figure tells you everything about the state it has been left in. The buyers are taking on the debts, which is the real payment.
A symbolic euro and a real burden
Bordeaux confirmed on Wednesday that the company controlled by Gerard Lopez has agreed to hand the club over to a firm called Park Bench. The operation, in the club's own wording, concludes for a symbolic euro with the assumption of debts. Nobody is pretending this is a bargain. Park Bench are absorbing liabilities that had been building for months while the club ran out of options, and the club described the agreement on social media as "a major step".
That phrase is doing a lot of work. For a fanbase that has watched the club drop out of the professional leagues entirely, a signed agreement is the first piece of good news in a long time.
How far they fell
Bordeaux were Ligue 1 regulars and European qualifiers within living memory. Years of mismanagement ended with exclusion from the national professional leagues and a slide down the pyramid that supporters have had to watch in instalments. The summer was spent flirting with the possibility that the club would simply cease to exist.
The takeover, if ratified, secures their place in Regional 1. That is a sentence worth reading twice. A club that played in the Champions League group stage inside the last twenty years is now fighting to stay in regional football, and calling it a rescue is fair enough.
Not signed off yet
The deal still has a hurdle. Park Bench must appear before the Regional Management Control Commission of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Football League, which will examine their finances and their intentions and decide whether the club can operate sustainably. It is a legal requirement rather than a formality, and until it is cleared Bordeaux's future remains technically open.
The reaction across French football has been relief mixed with caution, which seems about right. A one-euro sale with debts attached saves a club from closing. It does not, by itself, rebuild one.
Takeover facts: Girondins de Bordeaux announced on 30 September 2026 that the company owned by Gerard Lopez has agreed to sell the club to Park Bench for a symbolic one euro with the assumption of debts. The deal is not yet ratified; the buyers must be interviewed by the Regional Management Control Commission of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Football League. Success would secure Bordeaux's place in Regional 1 after the club's exclusion from the French professional leagues.
