Mikel Arteta is staying at Arsenal. The Spaniard has agreed an improved contract with the Premier League champions, ending a negotiation that had been running quietly for months and removing the one piece of uncertainty hanging over a club that has just won its first title since 2004.
His existing deal runs out at the end of this season, which is what gave the talks their deadline. BBC Sport reported earlier in September that the two sides were close. They have now got it done. Nobody has put a number on the length of the new agreement, but it is understood to take Arteta into at least a tenth year at the club he joined as manager in December 2019.
A big pay rise to go with the new terms
Arteta was already one of the better-paid managers in the division on £10m a year plus £5m in bonuses. The new deal pushes that figure up sharply. Arsenal have not treated this as a routine renewal, and the money reflects where they think the manager sits in the hierarchy of European coaching right now.
He had been open about wanting to stay. Asked about the talks last week, Arteta told reporters that supporters had nothing to worry about. "I'm extremely happy and I feel very grateful to work with the people I work with," he said. That was about as strong a hint as a manager can give without announcing the thing himself.
Why he never really looked like leaving
Winning the league last season was not the end point for Arteta. People around the club describe his ambition in terms of a dynasty rather than a trophy, and that framing explains a lot about the decision. He has spent almost seven years assembling this squad. Walking away from it now, with the team at its peak, would have made very little sense.
There was also the Champions League final, which Arsenal lost on penalties. That night hurt, and it has clearly not faded. Coming that close to a first European Cup is exactly the kind of thing that keeps a manager in the building rather than driving him out of it.
What it means for the squad
Continuity at the top matters more than it sounds. Arsenal are in the middle of tying down several of their key players, with Declan Rice's long-term deal reportedly being finalised during this international break. Those conversations are far easier to have when a player knows who will be picking the team in three years' time.
Arsenal have not had this kind of stability since Arsene Wenger's best years. The foundation of everything they have built since 2019 is the manager, and that foundation is now locked in. Whether it produces more history is the question Arteta has signed up to answer.
