Aaron Ramsdale has not played a competitive match in five months. He is 28, he has five England caps, clubs have spent a combined £74m on him, and he is currently the fourth-choice goalkeeper at a Championship club. He has not been in a single one of Southampton's ten matchday squads this season.
Working out how that happened means going back to one afternoon at the Emirates in April 2023.
The mistake that started it
Arsenal were closing on the title. Ramsdale made an error that gifted Southampton the opening goal in a 3-3 draw. Win that game and the championship is in Arsenal's hands; instead Manchester City took it from there and never gave it back.
The strange part is that the season was still, by every other measure, a good one for him. He made the PFA team of the year and was named goalkeeper of the year at the London Football Awards. Four months after the Southampton draw, Arsenal signed David Raya from Brentford, and Raya had the shirt within weeks.
Ramsdale lost his place after four league games in 2023-24. He played twice more in the league that season, and in one of them, against Brentford, he made another error that let Yoane Wissa score. Arsenal won 2-1. He never played for them again. He had arrived for £24m from a relegated Sheffield United in 2021, won over a sceptical crowd with a full-stretch save from a James Maddison free-kick that Peter Schmeichel called the best he had seen in years, and made 89 appearances with 32 clean sheets.
Southampton, then Newcastle, then nothing
The £25m move to Southampton in August 2024 looked sensible on both sides. Russell Martin wanted a goalkeeper who could play out from the back and Ramsdale could do that as well as anyone. Then Southampton finished bottom of the Premier League with 12 points, the second-lowest total in the competition's history. Ramsdale played 30 league games and conceded 66 goals, more than any other keeper that season, which says as much about the eleven in front of him as about him. Plenty of Saints fans said so at the time.
It was his fourth relegation, after Chesterfield on loan, Bournemouth in 2019-20 and Sheffield United. The Bournemouth one is worth noting: he was their player of the year in the season they went down.
The Newcastle loan in 2025-26 was meant to reset everything. He made 23 appearances in all competitions with two clean sheets, played only 12 times in the league, and neither he nor Nick Pope settled the argument. He also conceded seven in one night, in a 7-2 Champions League last-16 defeat by Barcelona. It is the most he has let in in a single game.
Why he is still at St Mary's
Tonda Eckert has Daniel Peretz as his number one, George Long behind him, and Jamie Jones back at the club largely to train. Eckert's public line on Ramsdale is carefully neutral. "We've had honest conversations from the first day of pre-season until the very last day of the transfer window. The expectations for him are clear to support the team in the best way and he's been very professional in doing that so far."
Ramsdale had loan offers in England, Spain and Italy over the summer and turned all of them down. His wife had recently given birth to their second child and the family are settled on the south coast. He is popular in the dressing room, liked by the supporters, and believes he can win the shirt back. He is prepared to stay and fight for it until January at least.
Asmir Begovic, who mentored him at Bournemouth almost a decade ago, thinks his old understudy will be finding it hard. "I had a few spells where I was frozen out at a club for a short time but I can't really relate to Aaron's situation. In the meantime he'll have to make sure that he trains well and stays fit and be ready if an opportunity comes up to play."
Then the honest bit. "I'd love to see Aaron playing again and hopefully it happens in January but I'm fully aware that it won't be a straightforward situation." Goalkeepers do not get many prime years back. Ramsdale is spending one of his in a training bib.
