Emiliano MartÃnez has admitted that Sunday's World Cup final defeat to Spain left him questioning whether he could face continuing his international career with Argentina, revealing the extent of the emotional toll the loss has taken on the goalkeeper and the squad as a whole.
The Aston Villa stopper, who was central to Argentina's 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar and has since become one of the most recognised goalkeepers on the planet, spoke openly in an interview about the mental weight of carrying a nation's hopes — and the devastation of falling short at the very last hurdle in North America.
A Final Too Far
"After the final whistle I was just sitting in the dressing room staring at the floor," MartÃnez said. "I couldn't move. I kept going through every moment in my head, every save I didn't make, every chance I could have changed. That feeling doesn't go away in a day or a week."
Spain won the 2026 World Cup final on penalties after a tense 1-1 draw, with MartÃnez — so often Argentina's hero in shootouts — unable to replicate the heroics that made him a legend in Qatar. The defeat was especially painful given that Argentina had battled back from a goal down in the second half to equalise, only to then fall short in the spot-kick lottery.
"There were moments in the tournament where I felt we were destined to win it again," he added. "But football doesn't work like that. Spain were exceptional and they deserved it."
International Future in Doubt
Perhaps most striking was MartÃnez's admission that he seriously considered walking away from international football in the immediate aftermath. At 34, the Aston Villa goalkeeper is at the latter stage of his career on the international stage, and the physical and emotional demands of another World Cup cycle are significant.
"In those first hours after the game, honestly, yes, I thought about it," he said. "I thought — do I put myself through this again? But then I wake up the next morning, I see my teammates, and I know I can't leave like this. Not on a loss in a final. That's not how I want to finish."
The comments will come as a relief to Argentine fans, many of whom had feared the tournament might signal the end of his international career. Manager Lionel Scaloni also expressed confidence that MartÃnez would continue, calling him "irreplaceable" in any discussion of Argentina's goalkeeper options.

MartÃnez will now return to Aston Villa, where manager Unai Emery will be delighted to have one of the world's best shot-stoppers available for pre-season. The Villa keeper had an outstanding club campaign last season and will be eager to channel his World Cup heartbreak into performances at club level.
Whether Argentina can regroup and build a new-look squad under Scaloni for the next major tournament cycle remains to be seen, but the signs suggest MartÃnez has no intention of going quietly.
