At MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, under the thick June sun of the New York metropolitan area, Kylian Mbappé is about to walk out for what could be the defining moment of his international career. France vs Senegal. Group I. The 2026 FIFA World Cup.

At 27, Mbappé is no longer the precocious teenager who helped France win the 2018 trophy in Russia. He is the finished article — the most complete attacker on the planet, the captain of the French national team, and the man shouldering all of the country's considerable expectations. The World Cup he has spent a decade dreaming of properly leading is finally here.

Real Madrid's Weapon Arrives With Everything to Prove

In two seasons at Real Madrid, Mbappé has been extraordinary. 86 goals in 103 appearances across league and cup. LaLiga titles. A Champions League final. He has silenced doubters who questioned whether his direct style would translate to the slower rhythms of Spanish football. It has. Emphantically.

But at international level, there is unfinished business. France came agonisingly close in 2022 — Mbappé scored a hat-trick in the final against Argentina, becoming only the second player ever to do so, yet still ended up on the losing side. The trophy went to Messi. The personal numbers were spectacular; the team prize was not.

That hurt. And while Mbappé has been careful not to say so in public, everyone around the French camp knows that 2022 sits heavily on him. This is his tournament. His moment to write the final paragraph.

Senegal: Opponents Who Will Not be Starstruck

Senegal arrive in New Jersey as legitimate contenders to progress from Group I. The Lions of Teranga, built around a core of Premier League players and anchored by the imposing presence of their captain, are one of the most physically formidable sides in the competition. Sadio Mané may be at the twilight of his career but remains capable of decisive moments. And their defensive structure — compact, disciplined, hard to break down — will test France's patience from the first minute.

Coach Aliou Cissé has spoken openly about containing Mbappé as the central challenge of the opening match. The plan will be familiar: drop deep, crowd the central spaces, and force France's star man to try to beat four defenders on his own. It has worked before, at least for long periods.

Didier Deschamps' Options

Deschamps faces an interesting tactical decision. France have a squad of tremendous depth — Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembélé, Marcus Thuram, Randal Kolo Muani, Adrien Rabiot — but the whole system is built around giving Mbappé the freedom to make runs into the channels and arrive late into shooting positions.

The question is whether to use a 4-3-3 with Mbappé as a false nine, or play him wide left where he can attack space in behind the full-back. Senegal's right back will be among the busiest players on the pitch either way.

The Bigger Picture

France are among the three or four genuine favourites for the tournament. Their squad is experienced, their depth is extraordinary, and their captain arrives in career-best form. A win here — and the prediction is France will get one — sets the tone for everything that follows.

Mbappé has waited long enough. France vs Senegal kicks off June 16 at 3 PM ET at MetLife Stadium.
