Will Messi Play at the World Cup? Argentina Waits for Its Most Important Answer

The greatest player of his generation — and by many accounts, of all time — has still not told anyone what he plans to do this summer. Lionel Messi, now 38 years old, remains undecided on whether he will play for Argentina at the 2026 World Cup, a tournament that will be held on home soil across the United States, Canada and Mexico. His manager, Lionel Scaloni, confirmed this week that the decision rests entirely with Messi and that Argentina will not rush him into anything. "We are in no hurry. Let's hope he says yes," Scaloni told reporters.

The uncertainty is both understandable and tantalising. This is, in all likelihood, Messi's final chance to appear at a World Cup. He already won the tournament in 2022 in Qatar — the one trophy that had eluded him for his entire career — and that achievement gave him, and the sport, a moment of pure resolution. To return and defend it would be extraordinary. But at 38, with the demands that international football places on even the most gifted bodies, nothing can be taken for granted.

What Messi Has Said

Messi has been characteristically measured in his public statements. He says he will assess how he feels when he returns to pre-season with Inter Miami and take it from there. He wants to be sure he can give 100 per cent before committing to anything. It is the answer of a man who has spent decades prioritising performance over sentiment — who understands that showing up is only worthwhile if you can genuinely contribute.

There is some optimism in the Argentina camp. Inter Miami boss Javier Mascherano, who knows Messi as well as almost anyone in football, appears to believe the 38-year-old will feature in Argentina's World Cup plans. Scaloni himself has said he will do everything in his power to ensure Messi is involved. The will is clearly there on both sides. The question is whether the body cooperates.

What It Would Mean

A World Cup on American soil, with the world's most famous footballer still playing — it is a storyline that writes itself. For a tournament already generating enormous interest, Messi's participation would elevate it further still. Argentina, as reigning champions, arrive as one of the favourites. With Messi in the side, they would be the team everyone watches. Without him, they remain strong — but the magic of watching history happen in real time would be absent. Football is holding its breath.
