'So Weak' — Zirkzee Blasted and Told He's 'Not a Man Utd Player' After Sunderland Draw

The criticism has been coming for a while. But after Manchester United's goalless draw at Sunderland — a game they needed to win in their push for European qualification — the verdict from pundits and former players has been unanimous and brutal. Joshua Zirkzee, signed from Bologna last summer for around £36 million, put in a display against the newly-promoted side that left even the most patient observers running out of arguments in his defence.

"So weak" was one of the kinder assessments doing the rounds after the game. Several prominent voices went further, stating flatly that Zirkzee simply does not have the profile to lead the line for a club with Manchester United's ambitions. He won barely anything in the air, offered little hold-up play, and faded from the game almost entirely in the second half. For a centre-forward, that combination of shortcomings is about as damaging a collection as you can assemble.

The Question of Whether He Was Ever the Right Signing

Hindsight is a powerful thing, but there were questions about the Zirkzee deal from the moment it was announced. His strengths — technical quality, link-up play, movement — are genuine, and he showed them to considerable effect at Bologna. But those same attributes can struggle to translate at a club in the middle of a rebuild, chasing results under pressure week after week. United need a striker who can impose himself on games physically, drag defenders around, and create space for those around him. Whether Zirkzee can become that player is a question the club's decision-makers are now seriously asking.

The Sunderland draw also exposed wider problems in Michael Carrick's side. The midfield lacked creativity and drive, the wide players struggled to deliver quality balls into the box, and without a focal point in attack who could win the ball and bring others into play, United's forward line looked disjointed and ineffective. It was the kind of frustrating afternoon that sums up the challenges Carrick still faces in reshaping this squad.

What Next for Zirkzee?

Questions are already circulating about whether Zirkzee will be part of the plans at Old Trafford next season. The player is only 23 years old and has shown — particularly in his earlier weeks at the club — that he is capable of producing moments of real quality. His technique is not in doubt. But Premier League football demands a level of physicality that he has consistently found difficult to meet, and unless he finds a way to impose himself more directly on matches, it is hard to see how United can keep faith with him as their primary striking option going forward.

For now, the focus will be on securing European football, which United still need results to achieve. They cannot afford too many more performances like the one at Sunderland if that goal is to be met. Zirkzee has a chance to respond. The question is whether he takes it.

Match facts: Sunderland 0-0 Manchester United | Premier League | Stadium of Light | 17 May 2026. Man United still chasing European qualification under manager Michael Carrick. Zirkzee signed from Bologna, summer 2025, reported fee £36m.
