Micky van de Ven has become one of the most coveted defenders in the Premier League this summer, with Manchester United and Liverpool both understood to be tracking the Tottenham centre-back ahead of what looks like a complicated few months at Spurs. The 23-year-old Dutchman has been outstanding in patches this season — when he has been fit — and his combination of pace, composure, and ability to carry the ball from deep has drawn comparisons to some of the best ball-playing defenders in European football. Both clubs see him as a long-term answer to problems they have been trying to solve for different reasons.

Why both clubs want him

For Manchester United, the need is immediate. Carrick's back four has lacked a genuinely elite centre-back capable of playing out of pressure and covering ground at pace. Harry Maguire's era has passed, Lisandro Martinez has struggled to stay fit, and the search for a first-choice central defender has been ongoing. Van de Ven fits the profile almost perfectly. For Liverpool, the situation is different but equally pressing — Virgil van Dijk is leaving at the end of the season, and finding someone to anchor the defence after the Dutchman's departure is Arne Slot's most important summer task. Van de Ven would be the closest like-for-like replacement available in the English market.

Tottenham's position

Spurs are not looking to sell and have Van de Ven under contract for several more years. But the club's situation going into next season is genuinely unclear — they are battling relegation alongside West Ham and the uncertainty about which division they will be playing in creates an obvious complication when it comes to keeping hold of top players. If Tottenham go down, retaining Van de Ven on a Premier League salary becomes significantly harder. If they stay up, they have grounds to hold firm on their valuation, which is understood to be above £80m.

The player's view

Van de Ven has said nothing publicly, as you would expect at this point in the season with Spurs still fighting for survival. But his performances have spoken clearly enough. A defender of his quality does not have to wait long for options when the summer window opens. The question is not whether he will attract serious bids — it is which club he chooses when they arrive.

Player profile: Micky van de Ven, 23, centre-back. Club: Tottenham Hotspur. Valuation: £80m+. Linked clubs: Manchester United, Liverpool. Tottenham's league position: bottom three, three games remaining. Van Dijk leaving Liverpool this summer — replacement needed.
