The club is planning to clear out virtually the entire engine room — with both Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte expected to leave Old Trafford when their contracts expire — and has identified a trio of targets to reshape the middle of the pitch entirely. Those three names, according to Sky Sports and Goal.com, are Bournemouth's Tyler Adams and Alex Scott, and West Ham's Mateus Fernandes.
The scale of the ambition reflects where United now find themselves. Having secured Champions League football for next season, Carrick needs a midfield capable of competing across multiple competitions at the highest level. What he inherited was ageing and inconsistent. What he is determined to build is dynamic, physical, and young enough to grow with the club.
Tyler Adams: The Engine Room
Of the three main targets, Tyler Adams represents the most immediately recognisable profile. The American international has been outstanding for Bournemouth since joining, bringing intensity, pressing quality, and a reading of the game that belies his years. United are understood to be leading the race for his signature, with Bournemouth setting an asking price in the region of £45 million — a figure the club considers reasonable given his age and contribution.
Adams himself has made no secret of his desire to play Champions League football, and the opportunity to join one of England's biggest clubs ahead of what will be a World Cup year for the United States gives the move an extra dimension of appeal. United's hierarchy see him as the kind of relentless, ball-winning presence the squad has been missing since Casemiro's best days.
Alex Scott and Mateus Fernandes: The Younger Options
Alex Scott, also at Bournemouth, represents something different — a technically gifted, mobile midfielder in his early twenties whose best football clearly lies ahead of him. His ability to carry the ball forward and dictate tempo has attracted the attention of several top-flight clubs, but United are now understood to be among the front-runners. The fact that both Scott and Adams play for the same club could prove either convenient or complicated as negotiations develop.
Mateus Fernandes, meanwhile, is the wild card. The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder has been one of the brighter sparks of an otherwise difficult West Ham campaign, and United scouts have been watching him closely for several weeks. A technically refined player with excellent positional awareness, he has also been identified as a possible long-term successor in the creative midfield role that Bruno Fernandes currently occupies. Morgan Rogers has separately been mentioned in that context too, but the Fernandes link is the most recent to gain traction.
