Aston Villa's European Dream Is Still Alive — Just
A 1-0 deficit is not the end. It is, for a manager of Unai Emery's European pedigree, the kind of position he has been in before — and come through. Aston Villa face Nottingham Forest in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final at Villa Park on Thursday evening, and they need to score without conceding to keep their dreams of an Istanbul final alive. Given the form they showed in dismantling Bologna 7-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals, the quality is clearly there. The question is whether the execution will match the occasion.
The first leg defeat at the City Ground was, by Villa's own admission, below their best. Emery suggested after the final whistle that his team were distracted — that the enormity of the occasion weighed on players who have not yet experienced many evenings of this magnitude at club level. Villa Park on a European night is a different proposition. The ground creates an atmosphere that has already pushed the team through several knockout rounds, and the supporters will arrive on Thursday knowing exactly what is required.
What Emery Needs From His Players
Villa's attacking options give Emery genuine flexibility in how he sets up. Ollie Watkins, who has been in excellent form throughout the European campaign, offers the directness and movement that can trouble any defensive structure. Jacob Ramsey and Morgan Rogers provide creativity from deeper positions, and Leon Bailey's pace from wide areas is a consistent threat. If Villa get an early goal — if they can shift the tie's momentum before Forest settle into their defensive shape — the second leg could be a very different contest to the first.
The risk, of course, is the counter-attack. Forest under Vitor Pereira are clinical on the break, and an away goal would make Villa's task almost impossible. Emery knows this. His sides are typically disciplined in their defensive shape even when chasing a game. Managing both the need to attack and the risk of exposure will be the key tactical challenge of the evening.
History Says Anything Is Possible
This is the Europa League, a competition defined by improbable results and comebacks that seemed impossible until they happened. Villa have the quality, the stadium, the manager, and the supporters. They need one goal to make this a contest. If they get it, Thursday night could be very special indeed.
