Arsenal want Mateus Fernandes. The Times reported on Friday that the Gunners have registered genuine interest in the West Ham midfielder ahead of what looks like being a busy summer at the Emirates. Fernandes, 21, has been one of the standout performers in a chaotic season for West Ham, the kind of player who makes the team around him look better — which makes his potential departure from a club likely heading into a significant rebuild all the more plausible. Arsenal's interest is framed as serious rather than exploratory. They know who they want. The question is what it will cost them to get him.

What Fernandes Brings to Arsenal's Midfield

The Portuguese midfielder joined West Ham from Sporting CP in 2024, and while the club has struggled to sustain any consistency this season, Fernandes has been a genuine bright spot. He's mobile, comfortable in tight spaces, and reads the game with a composure that belies his age. At Arsenal, he would slot into a midfield that already features Thomas Partey, Martin Odegaard, and Declan Rice — but the club are known to want more dynamism and athleticism in the engine room, and Fernandes fits that profile. He can press, he can carry the ball forward, and he doesn't go missing in big games. Those are qualities Mikel Arteta actively seeks in his recruits.

Arsenal's Midfield Planning for 2026-27

This isn't Arsenal's only midfield interest this summer. Reports also suggest the club are looking at Victor Froholdt, though there the race with Porto could complicate matters. What's clear is that Arteta wants to increase competition and depth in central areas — last season's title challenge was ultimately derailed partly by fatigue and injury to key midfielders, and strengthening that position is a priority before next season begins. Fernandes, still under contract at West Ham, won't come cheap. But if the Hammers are rebuilding their squad — as seems inevitable given their league position — they may not be in a position to hold out for a premium price indefinitely.

West Ham's Position and What Happens Next

West Ham will not want to lose their best young talent without a fight, and they have the contractual leverage to demand a significant fee. Arsenal have shown in recent windows that they're willing to spend when the right player is available — the Declan Rice deal proved that. The coming weeks will test how serious that interest really is. Fernandes, for his part, has said nothing publicly. But at 21, with a Champions League club showing genuine interest, the temptation will be significant. Arsenal need to move decisively if they're serious, because they won't be the only club looking at him.

Transfer context: Mateus Fernandes, 21 (born September 2003), is a Portuguese central midfielder currently at West Ham United. He joined from Sporting CP in 2024. Arsenal are among the clubs interested in signing him in the summer 2026 transfer window.
