Arsenal's Summer Target Is Clear

Reaching the Champions League final changes everything for a club's transfer ambitions, and Arsenal's summer window was already shaping up to be one of significant activity. Now that Mikel Arteta's side have confirmed their place in Budapest, the scale of that investment is likely to increase. At the centre of their plans, according to multiple reports, is Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez — a player who only arrived in the Spanish capital eighteen months ago from Manchester City, and who has already become one of the most valuable strikers in European football.

Arsenal are understood to be willing to go beyond €100 million to sign the 26-year-old Argentine, and their pathway to financing that move is being reported as a double sale: Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz are both available. Jesus has struggled for consistent minutes under Arteta this season, and the Brazilian is understood to be seeking a club where regular first-team football is guaranteed. Havertz, who moved to Arsenal from Chelsea in the summer of 2023, has also been productive but may be sacrificed to fund higher-profile arrivals.

Alvarez Plays Hard to Get

The stumbling block, as ever with elite players at successful clubs, is the subject's own contentment. Alvarez has publicly stated he is happy at Atletico, and the club are in the process of preparing a contract extension that would make him the highest-paid player at the Wanda Metropolitano alongside Jan Oblak. His involvement in Atletico's Champions League run — including a goal in the first leg against Arsenal — only strengthens his hand in any negotiation about his long-term future.

That said, the lure of the Champions League final and the chance to work under one of Europe's most respected coaches is a powerful argument. Arsenal's record in retaining and attracting elite talent under Arteta has improved markedly over the past three years, and the club's ambition is no longer in question. Whether that is enough to convince Alvarez to move again so soon after joining Atletico remains to be seen — but the Gunners are clearly prepared to make a serious effort.
