Jude Bellingham Buys into Cricket's Birmingham Phoenix — and It Says Everything About His Ambitions Off the Pitch

Jude Bellingham has bought a stake in Birmingham Phoenix, the cricket franchise competing in The Hundred. He's 22 years old, plays for Real Madrid, and is already building a business portfolio that goes well beyond football.

The choice of Birmingham Phoenix feels deliberately personal. He grew up in Birmingham. His family is from there. Buying into the Phoenix isn't just a financial calculation — it's a statement about where he's from and where his loyalties lie, no matter where his career takes him geographically.

The Hundred has attracted serious investment interest since the ECB began selling stakes to outside buyers. Several Premier League footballers and high-profile figures have now bought in, drawn by the competition's growing broadcast profile and the long-term potential of city-based franchises. Birmingham Phoenix, competing in England's second-largest city, is one of the more attractive propositions in the mix.

For Bellingham, the timing is worth noting. He had a difficult stretch at Real Madrid earlier this season — goals drying up, questions about whether the move from Dortmund had come too soon starting to surface. He's since rediscovered his form and reminded Bernabeu regulars what they have. But the cricket investment is a reminder he's building something much larger than any individual run of form.

It also says something about the modern elite footballer. At 22, Bellingham isn't just focused on the next game or next contract. He's thinking about brand, about roots, about a future that extends beyond his playing career while still very much in the middle of it. It's professional, self-aware, and — if you'll excuse the pun — well outside the boundary of what most players his age are thinking about.

Birmingham Phoenix's next campaign can't come soon enough. Bellingham will probably be watching from Madrid. But his name is now part of the franchise, which means every time they take the field, he's part of the story too.
