LUCAS VAZQUEZ JOINS BAYER LEVERKUSEN ON FREE TRANSFER AFTER REAL MADRID EXIT
Bayer Leverkusen have added a wealth of experience to their squad with the arrival of Lucas Vázquez, who joins on a free transfer after bringing his long Real Madrid chapter to a close. The 34-year-old has agreed a two-year contract, marking the first time in his senior career that he will play outside Spain.
Vázquez departs Madrid as a serial winner, having collected five Champions League medals, four La Liga titles, and an incredible 20 trophies overall since making his debut in 2015. A product of the club’s youth system, he became a reliable figure thanks to his adaptability — equally comfortable operating as a winger or covering at right-back — and amassed over 400 appearances in white.
Despite featuring 32 times in La Liga last season, his opportunities at the very top level began to shrink, especially after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s high-profile arrival. That prompted him to seek a new challenge, one that Leverkusen were quick to offer.
The Spaniard admitted that advice from former Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, now head coach at Madrid, and ex-teammate Dani Carvajal convinced him to make the leap.
“Everything I heard about the club was true — the ambition, the hunger, the drive to compete for the biggest prizes,” Vázquez explained. “That’s the kind of environment I want to be part of, and I can’t wait to get started here.”
Leverkusen have undergone major changes this summer, losing Jeremie Frimpong to the Premier League champions, Florian Wirtz to Liverpool, Granit Xhaka to Sunderland, and Jonathan Tah to Bayern Munich. In Vázquez, however, they gain a proven leader with the pedigree to steady a squad in transition.
Two years after lifting a famous domestic Double, the German side will be counting on his experience and mentality to help fuel another push for silverware.
