BORUSSIA DORTMUND SIGN CHELSEA'S CARNEY CHUKWUEMEKA ON FIVE-YEAR DEAL
Borussia Dortmund have completed the permanent signing of England youth international Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea, with the midfielder penning a five-year contract at Signal Iduna Park.
The 21-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan with the Bundesliga giants, where he impressed with his creativity and energy in midfield. His performances convinced Dortmund to push for a full transfer, with the deal reportedly worth around £24 million once add-ons are included.
Chukwuemeka originally joined Chelsea in 2022 from Aston Villa for £20 million, going on to make 32 appearances in all competitions. However, limited playing time at Stamford Bridge led to his temporary move to Germany in January, where he quickly established himself as a fan favourite for his dynamism and ability to carry the ball through midfield.
Alongside the Chukwuemeka deal, Chelsea defender Aaron Anselmino has also agreed a season-long loan switch to Dortmund. The young centre-back has already travelled to Germany to finalise the move, as BVB continue to reshape their squad following the departures of several key players this summer.
From Chelsea’s perspective, the sale of Chukwuemeka adds to what has been one of the most significant windows of outgoings in recent years. The club has now generated over £270 million in transfer income, almost balancing out the £277 million spent on new arrivals. This financial juggling is crucial, as UEFA have instructed the Blues to maintain a positive net balance in order to register their new signings for the Champions League.
The west London club are already operating under scrutiny after being fined £26.7 million for breaching UEFA’s financial sustainability rules, while also recording a wage-to-revenue ratio above 80%. With that pressure in mind, more high-profile departures could follow before the transfer deadline, with Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell, Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku and Tyrique George all linked with possible exits.
Despite the outgoings, Chelsea remain active in the market. They continue to monitor attacking reinforcements, with Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho and RB Leipzig midfielder Xavi Simons among the names being considered.
For Dortmund, the capture of Chukwuemeka reflects their long-standing strategy of recruiting promising young talent and developing them into key first-team players. The midfielder now looks set to play a central role in their Bundesliga and Champions League campaigns over the coming seasons.
