MIDDLESBROUGH SIGN NEWCASTLE'S MATT TARGETT ON SEASON-LONG LOAN
Middlesbrough have reinforced their defence with the signing of Matt Targett, addressing the gap left by Alex Bangura’s hamstring injury. The Sierra Leone international is expected to remain sidelined until after the international break, prompting Boro to act swiftly in the market.
Targett, 29, arrives from Newcastle United, where he struggled for minutes last season, making just five appearances across all competitions and featuring for only 20 minutes in the Premier League.
Despite his limited game time on Tyneside, the left-back brings a strong pedigree. Across his career, he has spent 14 of his 15 senior campaigns in the Premier League, with his only season outside the top flight coming during a loan spell at Fulham in the Championship in 2017-18. Before his move to Newcastle for £15m in 2022, Targett had already built up extensive experience with Southampton and Aston Villa.
On the international stage, he represented England at under-21 level and played a part in the Young Lions’ success at the 2016 Toulon Tournament.
Targett becomes Middlesbrough’s seventh summer recruit, joining Alfie Jones, Callum Brittain, Abdoulaye Kante, Sontje Hansen, Sverre Nypan and Adilson Malanda as the Teessiders continue to strengthen ahead of the new campaign.
