IPSWICH TOWN BREAK CHAMPIONSHIP TRANSFER RECORD WITH £17.5M SIGNING OF SINDRE WALLE EGELI
Egeli arrives with a growing reputation after making his breakthrough in Denmark, scoring 11 goals in 40 appearances for Nordsjaelland following his move from Norwegian side Sandefjord at the age of just 16. His rapid progress has also seen him climb through the international ranks, representing Norway at every level from under-15s to the senior team, where he made his debut in last year’s Nations League clash with Kazakhstan.
The fee involved makes Egeli Ipswich’s record purchase and even surpasses Burnley’s £15.4m capture of Mike Tresor from Genk last summer. It is a statement of intent from the Tractor Boys, who have been reshaping their squad following relegation from the Premier League.
Egeli expressed his delight at sealing the move, telling the club’s media team:
“I’m really excited to have signed for Ipswich. This is a club with big history and a clear vision for the future, and I want to be part of that journey. As soon as I heard of their interest, I knew it was the right step for me. I’ve had some really positive conversations with the manager and now I can’t wait to get started, meet my new teammates, and play in front of the supporters.”
The young attacker becomes Ipswich’s 11th signing of the summer and their fourth in the space of a week, joining Marcelino Núñez — who crossed the divide from rivals Norwich City in a £10m deal — as part of a busy recruitment drive.
While Egeli offers versatility across both wings, his signing has been made possible in part by the club’s player sales. The departures of Liam Delap and Omari Hutchinson, which generated more than £67m combined, have freed up funds for boss Kieran McKenna to strengthen his squad with long-term prospects.
Despite his arrival, Egeli will not feature immediately; he was not registered in time to play in Ipswich’s Championship fixture against Derby County this weekend. McKenna’s side have had a slow start to the campaign, collecting just two points from their first three matches, and the addition of a young, dynamic forward is seen as a boost to their attacking options as the season unfolds.
