Marseille need money, and the player most likely to bring some in is their Denmark captain. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is reported to be on the way out in the winter transfer window, with Juventus said to be leading the chase.

Everything here comes from reports, so treat it that way. Foot01 says the French club are preparing for a busy January because they must sell players to avoid looming financial sanctions from Uefa and the DNCG, France's financial watchdog.

Why Marseille are sellers

Hojbjerg was linked with a move away a few months ago and chose to stay in France. His situation is said to have shifted. The former Tottenham midfielder is now reportedly being pushed towards the exit as the hierarchy tries to cut the wage bill sharply, and that makes the Denmark captain one of the more obvious candidates to go.

Gazzetta reports that Juventus are actively searching for midfield reinforcements and see him as a viable winter target. The reported market value is about 10 million euros, a modest figure that explains why Marseille would expect to be open to talks.

Bendtner sees the appeal

Former Juventus striker Nicklas Bendtner, a fellow Dane, told Gianluca Di Marzio that Hojbjerg would suit the club. "He made his mark in England," Bendtner said. "He now plays in France, for Olympique de Marseille, and is the captain of his national team."

Bendtner also described Juventus as a team in a rebuilding phase. "Juve is clearly in a rebuilding phase and it would be interesting to see him there," he added. "But compared to when I was there, today, everything is very different."

Until anything is signed, nothing changes for Hojbjerg except the noise. He still has a Marseille season to play, and the club he is expected to leave still needs him to perform in a difficult period. January will tell whether the reports hold up.

Transfer context: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Marseille and Denmark captain, reported to be wanted by Juventus in January. Market value around 10 million euros. Reports from Foot01 and Gazzetta, via Goal. Nothing has been confirmed by either club.
