For most of the night Danny Ward had been excellent for Wales. Then he made the one mistake of the night, and Denmark made him pay. Rasmus Hojlund scored from the penalty spot and Wales lost 1-0 at the Cardiff City Stadium, their third defeat of a Nations League campaign that is now getting uncomfortable.

Ward keeps Denmark out, then lets them in

Denmark were the more threatening side from the start, and Ward had to be sharp. He made good saves to deny Hojlund and Gustav Isaksen as the visitors kept finding space, and for a long stretch Wales looked as though they might hold on for a hard-earned goalless draw. Craig Bellamy's team had made a single change from the previous game, bringing Brennan Johnson back into the side.

It came apart in the second half. Ward played a loose pass in his own penalty area that gave possession straight to Isaksen, and as the midfielder dived in to try to recover, the goalkeeper caught him. A penalty followed. Hojlund, the former Manchester United striker, sent Ward the wrong way for the winner in the 75th minute.

Wales short on quality in possession

There was no lack of effort from the hosts. What they lacked was the ability to keep the ball and build anything dangerous. Johnson had the one chance of note for Wales all night, and that tells you most of what you need to know about how the 90 minutes went. Denmark were far more menacing, and there were no complaints about the result.

It also extends a poor run against this opponent. Wales have now lost their past five internationals against Denmark, and the gap in quality was visible again in Cardiff.

Two games left

Defeat leaves Wales bottom of Group A4 with two matches remaining. They face Norway and Portugal next month, two sides who played each other on Sunday night as well. Wales know they need at least one positive result from those games to avoid finishing fourth and to keep their hopes of Euro 2028 qualification alive.

That is a big ask against opponents of that level, and Bellamy will know it. His side have shown they can compete, but competing and getting results are different things, and the next two games will tell us which version of this team turns up.

Match facts: Wales 0-1 Denmark, UEFA Nations League League A Group 4, Cardiff City Stadium, Sunday 4 October 2026. Denmark: Hojlund (75th minute, penalty). Wales are bottom of Group A4 with two games left, against Norway and Portugal next month.
